New research from @MassGenBrigham could change how we treat degenerative spinal disease. Spine researchers @MoHadzipasic and @ShankarLabMGH found that mechanical stress activates a pathway (ROCK) that stiffens spinal ligaments—and blocking it may prevent the damage. Could non-surgical treatments be next? Read more about their research: mgriblog.org/2025/07/14/res…

Can AI help automate exam prep material in fields like neurosurgery? In a blind test, we had 15 neurosurgeons compare standard Q-bank answer explanations vs AtlasGPT (a neurosurgery-tuned GPT-4 RAG model) AtlasGPT won… more comprehensive and better referenced

It is with great sadness that we share about the tragic loss of Dr. Mike Groff, 3 members of his family including Dr. Joy Saini his wife who was a NWH UroGyn physician, their daughter Karenna who was an incoming PGY1 neurosurgery resident at NYU, their son Jared and 2 of their friends. Mike served as the Division Chief of Neurosurgery Spine at BWH from 2011 until 2024 as well as the Vice Chair of Neurosurgery at BWH. He was an Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at Harvard Medical School. In 2024 he became the Executive Medical Director of Neuroscience Rochester Regional Health, while retaining his HMS position during the transition. Mike was an internationally recognized thought leader in spinal disorders. He was the doctor’s doctor and led the Neurosurgery Research and Education Foundation. He was in several leadership position within AANS, including being the Chair of the Spine Section of AANS/CNS. Most of all, Mike was a compassionate, highly skilled and charismatic human being and neurosurgeon. He and his family will be sorely missed. As we grieve the loss of Mike, Joy, Karenna, Jared and their 2 friends, our hearts go out to their family in this time of profound sadness.

Congratulations to Brain Tumor Surgeon, Victoria Clark, MD PhD (@VictoriaEClark )! She was just awarded a @NINDSfunding K12 grant for her project entitled, “Targeting the Polycomb Repressive Complex 2 in Merlin-Deficient Tumors” So proud of her and our team at @MayoClinicNeuro
