People pissy about this because they don’t think a CEO of a national corporation should have to speak French. You’re right. They don’t have to; but when a Francophone employee dies on the job, maybe send out someone who can. Good judgement is also a quality CEO skill. #cdnpoli

PM Mark Carney says he is "very disappointed" in Air Canada CEO's English-only message of condolence: "It doesn't matter the circumstances, but particularly in these circumstances, lack of judgment and lack of compassion."

Should've Air Canada's CEO have included French in it? Yes. Should he have done a whole separate speech in French? No. Was it disrespectful to the pilot's family to include near zero French? Yes, to an extent. But if he worked for another airline there likely wouldn't have been a French component either.

If I gave the Air Canada speech I would have added some French to it. Specifically a section speaking to the family of Captain Forest. I'm not a fan of two exact speeches in each language. I like the flow of alternating different paragraphs- kind of like the bilingual version of the National Anthem. 👇

Three more cabinet ministers get in on the Air Canada CEO's French omission Melanie Joly " I just thought it showed the lack of empathy and a lack of sensitivity." Marc Miller "But this isn't the first time that he's been told to speak French, and he should know better." Steve MacKinnon "Well, Air Canada is a private corporation." But a reminder (via @sunlorrie) "However, it was this same committee that decided three years ago, during the review of the Official Languages Act, not to require the CEO of Air Canada ... to speak and understand French" How can these Liberal MPs legitimately pile-on when they chose not to require the Air Canada CEO to speak French? Faux outrage! ctvnews.ca/montreal/artic…

Carney conveys his displeasure that the message of condolence conveyed to Air Canada crash victims and families by the CEO had no verbal French translation "I am extremely disappointed by the message released by the CEO of Air Canada. It shows a lack of compassion." As he walks away you can hear him being asked why he himself has no French-speaking speechwriter Doesn't the lack of a Francophone speechwriter demonstrate a similar compassion shortage? And two pilots are dead and the media is obsessively focused on a language gotcha? @MarkJCarney

Carney is more upset that the CEO of Air Canada delivered his update in English. I mean, this is what Liberals worry about after losing 2 pilots in a terrible accident. @MarkJCarney

Mélanie Joly criticizes Air Canada’s CEO for issuing a statement only English after the crash. “Lack of empathy.” “Moral leadership.” Is this actually the issue… or a distraction?
