It’s always "The Bible must influence our laws!" until it comes to all those verses about welcoming the immigrant, helping the poor, feeding the hungry, bringing healthcare to the sick, forgiving debts, caring for our planet, laying down our swords, or loving all our neighbors.

Alex Pretti died as he lived — protecting his neighbors. Not hiding behind a mask. Not shooting a man in the back. Not lying to cover it up. In a country run by cowards, be like Alex Pretti.

If you have previously supported the Trump Administration, but the events of the last few weeks have you questioning that decision, it’s not too late to change your mind. You can work to make amends. You can choose integrity over loyalty. You can stop defending this dangerous regime. The best time to do it was 10 years ago, but the second best time is right now.

Take a moment to look at the inhumanity captured in this extraordinary photo running on the front page of tonight's Minneapolis @StarTribune. It shows federal immigration agents immobilizing a protester on the ground and spraying chemical irritant directly into his face. The scene reminds me of the brutality used against civil rights protesters in the 1960s. We look back at those old photos and wonder how the authorities could have behaved so savagely; many years from now, young Americans will look at these photos from 2026 and wonder how anyone could have justified shooting a woman in the head as she tried to drive away, arresting 5-year-old schoolchildren on the street, or holding a man down and spaying chemicals into his face. Thanks to the Star Tribune reporters and photographers for documenting this work; they create accountability, they make democracy work, and they make all of us in journalism proud.

He’s a 5-year-old boy in Minnesota who was arrested by ICE and then used as bait to lure his family members into custody—even though they are legal asylum seekers. Liam and his family members have been shipped to an ICE detention center 1200 miles away from their home. His preschool teacher, Ella Sullivan, had this to say about Liam: “He’s a bright young student, and he’s so kind and loving, and his classmates miss him, and all I want is for him to be safe and back here.”
