@ThomasEWoods @romanhelmetguy Can you address regulatory capture? Here's an example: A cartel or a govt sanctioned monopoly of a few players they limited licenses. New players face increasing regulatory barriers to entry. Despite relatively low prices compared to other markets, is this not predatory pricing?

I know everybody thinks you can just buy out all your competitors and then raise your price. I know everybody thinks that's easy. But economists who study this for a living have difficulty finding examples of predatory pricing. Yes, they lower their prices, but then when do they actually raise them? They don't dare, because of all the potential competition. If you look through the legal records of the various companies accused of monopolistic practices, you don't find any where predatory pricing is actually demonstrated. I know it's fun to accuse the economists of being stupid and theoretical and not grounded in the real world, but don't fall for Boomerisms like that

This is her dumbest take. Monopolies form naturally. Monopolies are much more profitable than competitive industries. So if you find yourself in a competitive industry, it makes sense to buy out or collude with all your competitors, or to temporarily take a loss in order to drive them out of business. The government itself is a naturally-forming monopoly on violence. Ayn Rand is frequently guilty of this kind of magical thinking in which everything would be perfect if the government just disappeared. Well, there are still large parts of Africa today in which there is effectively no government. Is it utopia? Meanwhile the Industrial Revolution could not have taken place without the financial incentives put in place by intellectual property law such as patents, which require an incredibly strong government to enforce. The right really needs to get away from this whole “everything the government does is bad” loser mindset.
Sowell Economics@sowelleconomics

Ayn Rand: "Under a free system, no one could acquire a monopoly on anything. If you look at economics, and economic history, you will discover that all monopolies have been established with government help."

Holy shit... someone built a free portable tool that activates Windows, kills the bloatware, and shuts down every telemetry service Microsoft buried in your OS. It's called GTweak. One .exe file. No install. No subscription. You download it, run it, and your Windows is finally yours. Every "Windows debloater" before this made you pick one trade-off. Activate but keep the spyware. Debloat but lose update control. Disable telemetry but break Defender toggles. GTweak does all of it inside a single portable executable. Here's what makes it different from every Windows tweaker that came before: → HWID + KMS activation built in, no sketchy batch scripts, no Massgrave links, no PowerShell one-liners pasted from a Reddit thread → Removes Cortana, Copilot, Recall, OneDrive, Edge, and every pre-installed UWP app on Windows 10 and 11 in one click → Disables keyloggers and telemetry across Windows and NVIDIA including the data collection tasks hiding in Task Scheduler that nobody talks about → Blocks Microsoft's shadow domains at the hosts file AND firewall level so the OS literally cannot phone home → Disables Defender, SmartScreen, Antimalware, VBS, and UAC with proper toggles instead of registry hacks that break on the next update → Pauses Windows Updates entirely and wipes the cached update files Microsoft refuses to let you delete → Kills Teredo, ISATAP, and IPv6 along with the diagnostic services running silently in the background → Activates the hidden Ultimate Performance power plan and fixes the Realtek audio delay bug nobody at Microsoft has patched in 5 years → Runs custom .ps1, .cmd, .bat, .reg scripts with TrustedInstaller privileges, the highest permission level Windows has → Built-in hardware monitor, NTFS compression, RAM cleaner, and secure Windows.old wipe Killed: $30 Windows 11 Pro keys, every "debloat script" repo with 47 forks and no maintenance, the $5/mo "PC optimizer" garbage running on YouTube ads. Works on every official Windows build since 10 (18362.116). One .NET Framework 4.8 dependency that's already on your machine. BSD 3-Clause License. 100% Opensource.

Anyone running for a leadership role with @LPNational needs to be able to articulate a political strategy, make difficult decisions regardless of their popularity, and make donor calls. That is the bare minimum. Pledging to be a representative for all party members is a joke. People will hate you. You do not represent everyone's interests. It's not possible, and it doesn't matter. Stop playing Model UN. It's a political party, not a social club for special needs adults.

He tried to buy a country to escape copyright law. This is not even a joke. 🤯 Meet Gottfrid Svartholm > Governments from 5 countries tried to shut him down. Traffic went up every time. > Every time they raided his servers, he came back in 3 days and gained more users. > He treated multi-million dollar lawsuits like free marketing. And it worked. 🤯 > Courts confused. Governments humiliated. Servers seized. Back online in 72 hours. > He ran the most wanted website in internet history and laughed about it publicly. 🔥 > The more they tried to kill The Pirate Bay, the stronger it got. Classic mistake. > He didn't just break copyright law. He made entire governments look powerless. 💀 > His plan B for server location was North Korea. His plan C was outer space. Seriously. > They blocked him in every country. Fans cloned the entire site to keep it alive anyway. > The most blocked website in history. Still alive. Still winning. One guy started it. 💀 > He played cat and mouse with the entire internet for 20 years. The mouse never lost. 🔥 Absolute GOAT 🐐

HOSTIS@hostis_black·
In April, a website that has been sued, blocked, deplatformed, and chased across thirty-seven domains over fifteen years quietly launched its own AI. Sci-Hub is the largest unauthorized library of scientific papers in human history. Ninety-five million academic papers. Tens of millions of books. Built and maintained by a single Kazakhstani neuroscientist named Alexandra Elbakyan since 2011, funded by donations, hosted on whatever country's registrar will tolerate it that year, mirrored across torrents and IPFS and Telegram bots. Elsevier sued. Sci-Hub stayed up. The American Chemical Society sued. Sci-Hub stayed up. India sued. Sci-Hub stayed up. Swedish registrar Njalla cut the .se domain in January. Sci-Hub stayed up at .al, .ru, .ee, .box, and a half-dozen .onion addresses the registrars cannot reach. Now the library has built its own intelligence. Sci-Bot launched in alpha in April. You ask it a research question. It answers, and it cites real papers from inside the corpus, with links that actually open the actual papers. The bot does not hallucinate citations. It cannot, because it only draws from papers it actually holds. The same property that the venture-funded labs have spent four years and forty billion dollars trying to engineer back into their products is a free side effect of training the model on a library that contains the books. Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and Meta have all been sued in the past eighteen months for training their models on the same shadow libraries that Sci-Hub assembled. Meanwhile the corpus those scripts were pointed at, the corpus those models were trained on, the corpus the entire generative AI industry is built on, sat right there the whole time, free, with a search box on top. The pirates beat them to it. Sci-Bot was built on a corpus that was already free, by a team that asked no permission, charging no one, with the explicit position that the right to read scientific research is older than the cartel that decided to charge for it. The same arithmetic the medieval guilds used to keep the printing trade in approved hands. The same arithmetic Pope Paul IV used in 1559 to publish the Index Librorum Prohibitorum. The same arithmetic the Stationers' Company used in seventeenth-century London. Knowledge has always had a fence around it. The fence has always been guarded by men who did not write the books. The library answers. We never asked permission. We never had to.

I take responsibility for my part of the loss. Usually my facts are my strength, but here, rhetoric and emotion were much more important. Also, I thought the question was so absurd we would be sure to win no matter what, so I focused on having fun bullying Daniel Fried instead of addressing the specific question enough. When I walked into the room full of liberal-democrat-type kids, and heard the response to our first two opponents, I should have thrown out my notes and adapted my argument to the audience much better.

No, .@scotthortonshow, we did not lose the *debate*, we lost the *vote*. These are two very different things. Afterwards I heard that several people had confessed to being afraid to be seen to vote against the motion.
