A dude came after Andrew Jackson with a gun (and Old Hickory beat him down with his cane). Harry Truman faced a full-on assault by two Puerto Rican nationalists while he was at Blair House. They killed one White House cop and wounded two others. Truman watched from his window until he was pulled away by security. In 1975, Gerald Ford faced two attacks in 17 days, both by women. One was by a member of the Charlie Manson cult, who failed to get off a shot. The other woman fired one shot that hit a bystander. And never forget Ronald Reagan was shot and hit by Jodie Foster obsessed John Hinkley in 1981. He recovered but one police officer had permanent nerve damage and his press secretary, hit in the head, had permanent brain damage. Obama faced numerous threats to his life. One dude opened fire on the White House, hitting it multiple times. (Obama wasn’t home at the time, but the would-be assassin didn’t know that.) Another sent Obama a letter with traces of ricin poison. Even Biden had attempts including one dude who tried to drive a truck into White House grounds. A fan of the Nazis, he claimed he was going to “kill the president" and "seize power.”

I felt like I could not say this at the time but I never liked Trevor Noah. I’ve never thought he was funny or insightful. It was unsurprising to me when his version of the Daily Show did not do well. It felt like we were supposed to cheer on someone that did not have that much talent just because of their race. The problem was Noah does not have any lens to analyze issues outside of race. So when it came to public policy affecting women or trans people he just didn’t have anything interesting or funny to say. Entirely unsurprising to learn his opinion justifying the slaughter of Jews and feeling outraged about a journalist asking actual questions.
