My father never came to a single thing I invited him to. Not my primary school graduation. Not my secondary school prize giving where I collected 3 awards and kept looking at the gate. Not my university matriculation. Not the ceremony when I got called to bar in 2012. I'd send him the date weeks in advance and he'd say I'll try and that was always the full sentence. I'll try. No follow up. No explanation after. My mother would sit in his place and clap loud enough for 2 people. I stopped inviting him after the bar call. Not from anger. Some people love you completely and still cannot show up and after a while you stop making them feel guilty about it. He was not a bad man. I want to be clear about that. He was a mechanic in Mushin for 35 years. Worked 6 days a week. Sent every one of us to school. Never raised his hand. Never left. The lights stayed on and the rent was paid and there was always food and he did all of it quietly without asking to be celebrated. He just could not sit in a plastic chair and watch something. I accepted that and moved on. Last year I bought my first property. A flat in Ojodu. Took 9 years of saving and 2 years of paperwork and a lawyer who nearly finished me. When the keys finally came I sat in the empty flat on the floor for an hour just breathing. I called my mother first. She screamed. My sister cried. I didn't call my father. 3 days later he called me. Said he heard about the flat from my mother. Said he wanted to come and see it. I didn't know what to do with that so I just said okay. Gave him the address. Figured he'd say I'll try and we'd never speak of it again. He showed up on Saturday at 9am. Stood at the door in his good agbada. The one he only wears for serious things. Holding a small nylon bag. I let him in and he walked through every room without speaking. Not quickly. Slowly. Like he was counting something. He checked the pipes under the kitchen sink. Knocked on the walls. Opened and closed the windows twice each. Looked at the ceiling in every room the way only a man who has fixed things his whole life looks at ceilings. Then he came and stood in the sitting room and looked at me. Said the pipework is good. Said the windows seal properly. Said whoever built this knew what they were doing. I nodded. Long silence. Then he opened the nylon bag. Inside was a small framed photo. Me at maybe 7 years old sitting on the bonnet of an old car in his workshop. Grinning. Both legs swinging. He's standing beside me with his hand on my shoulder looking at something outside the frame. I remember that day. I had gone to the workshop after school and he let me sit there while he worked and gave me a Fanta and put a Michael Jackson cassette on the small radio. I didn't know anyone had taken a photo. He said he kept it on his workshop table for 22 years. Said he wanted me to have something for the new place. I held that frame and stood very still. He said he knew he missed things. Said he was not good at the sitting and watching. That crowds made something in him go wrong in a way he never knew how to explain. Then he said the flat was good and he was proud and he asked if there was anything in the kitchen because he hadn't eaten. I laughed. Made him eggs and bread while he sat at my kitchen table in his good agbada like he owned the place. We ate and he told me about a car he was working on. I told him about a case that was giving me trouble. Normal conversation. The kind we should have been having for years. He left at 1pm. At the door he gripped my shoulder the same way he did in that photo. Didn't say anything. Didn't need to. The photo is on my sitting room wall now. First thing I hung in the whole flat. Some fathers cannot sit in the plastic chair. But mine drove to Ojodu in his good agbada on a Saturday morning with a 22 year old photograph in a nylon bag. That was his standing ovation. I just didn't know to look for it in that shape.

We just released the 2025 JAMB questions for Physics, Chemistry, Accounting, Government and Literature in English for students to assess their readiness for 2026 JAMB exams. They are properly vetted with clear answers and detailed explanations. What surprised me is how humbling it is, some students who felt ready weren’t, while some who were anxious turned out to be fine. It just shows you students current level honestly. If you’re writing JAMB this year, you probably owe yourself that truth now, not in the exam hall. It’s here: exams.educare.school If this doesn’t concern you, ignore it. But someone you care about is writing JAMB. Please share it with them.

Nigeria at 65! Independence Day means more than a public holiday - it’s a reminder of our journey as a people and the future we’re working towards. TKC took to the streets to hear what people had to say about independence and the Nigeria we want to see. What kind of Nigeria do you want to see at 65? #NigeriaAt65 #IndependenceDay #October1 #TKC4Peace

Today is her birthday. She is 55 years old today. Not the way I would love to celebrate her, but the way she would want to be fought for. I suffered in so many ways because she wasn't there to fight for me growing up, but I am gaining some momentum and I will get her back. I hope her next birthday would come with an amazing story. Happy birthday Iya Lábándélé Note: The language, mad or crazy, that I used is the Nigerian word for people who have mental health challenges. I chose it because it is what the reader would understand. Although I am not sensitive because euphemism don't reduce the potency of the pain, but I understand it is insensitive, coarse and uncouth, yet wouldn't refer to my mother or anyone with such language, except in literary situations to achieve clarity for the readers.

I doubt people understand how families of mad/crazy people feel. I doubt that they know that they may have families at all, but I understand, being a family member to one. I promise you that if you are not calm, collected, thoughtful, thick-skinned, resolute and a tough person, it will break you. Especially in Nigeria. I remember what I call my Ice Breaker or my "Introduction" into toughness and being blind to shame. It was when my mum's mental health issue began, she ran away from home and we were looking for her. Someone called my grandma to tell her she was seen at Challenge Bus Stop in Ìbàdàn. Challenge Bus Stop used to be a Bus Stop that had a popular market by it. The road was bad, dirty, tiny, busy and dangerous for pedestrians until this new government came in. Only those who have been in this state for at least two decades would get the picture. I got to the Bus Stop, roamed everywhere till I found her. She was so dirty, wet and smelly. She was reluctant, violent, she fought me, called me a kidnapper and was all noisy. She fought me off so hard, I was so sad because I couldn't believe my mum could ever become like that, but I didn't let go of my grip, because she was prepared to run off and we had been in search of her for days. I was 17. It was closing hours. You can imagine the crowd. Commuters were rushing to enter the taxis. I was not only fighting to get a taxi for myself, but my mum, while trying to out-do other people rushing to enter into those taxis at the same time and ensuring she didn't run away. It was either "I no fit carry mad person o" or they call an outrageous amount that could take you to another state, or the occupants of the taxi refuse to go with the taxi after experiencing some drama. You, are, in one word, a bad business. Other things you experience is isolation, betrayal and being gossiped. Isolation isn't an issue for me because I am naturally selective of my company, but one betrayal is an event that shook the hell out of me, after which I would tell you my experience with being gossiped, which is the funny one. What makes my mum's story very sad is that an anonymous person took advantage of my mum's mental health and impregnated her. She named a couple of persons when asked who the father was. My family eagerly spring to wanting to approach the persons. I stop them from doing so because I prefer to be strategic. I am not interested in finding a father for my sister, but punishing the said person from the 102 ways I curated as consequences for the wrong, when it is time. I know they'd deny and I can't work with a "claim". So I am going to wait till I have the time and resources to hold on to substantial evidence. My mom's story was inconsistent, but I had a friend who was twice my age that year, whose story was consistent about the supposed father of my sister, even more than my mother's. This friend claimed that he was sure about whom the father of my sister was on two basis, because she(my sister) looks like him and because he saw them(my mum and the man) together a lot, in the man's car, his house and several places before the birth of my sister. He talked to my family about it because he knew my approach to the issue was different, and not with mere confrontation. He charged them up and they approached him, only for him to arrest my mum and intimidate them. All these(pregnancy and back and forth) happened while I was away for close to two years in Ekiti. So, one evening in Ìbàdàn, after my sister has been birthed, I sat down with this friend who was say, 36 years, while I was 18, at a public place. Not long after we got there, the man my supposed friend accused of being the father of my sister approached me.
