There are grifters out there. I've seen that just in my own recent #SaveLucy effort that @LoneStarChica has been helping me with. Some crypto guys stepped up creating a token to give me the fees to help fight my legal battle. Some other crypto grifter took my story and set up his own token to collect his own fees. None of that money is going to save my dog.

This is a tough post to write, but a necessary one. I was recently asked by a reputable person within the rescue community to research a dog an individual had posted about, named “Duke.” Along with that, I was sent information alleging that the same person within the rescue community has been scamming people, using photos of dogs that were never actually in their possession and claiming they “saved” them. To be honest, this wasn’t entirely new to me. About six months ago (or more), I saw a post from this same individual, who lives in North Carolina, claiming he had rescued a dog off the streets. The problem? The photo was from BARC here in Houston, and the dog was still in Houston. I questioned him at the time but never received a response. I assumed he may not have seen it, and life got busy with everything else going on. He seemed like a nice person, but the truth is, it’s incredibly hard to know who someone really is behind a screen. Part of me wants to look at this with compassion. Maybe he’s struggling. Maybe he’s presenting the person he wishes he could be. I don’t know. But what I do know is this, when people donate to someone who is not legitimate, that money is taken away from real rescues doing real work, and from real dogs who desperately need help. That’s the part that hurts the most. Somewhere out there is a dog who missed out because of this. Below is an example. He posted about a dog named “Duke,” claiming the dog had been adopted, had a ten-year-old sister, and was found in a Walmart parking lot. A reverse image search tells a different story. That dog is actually named Cyril. He is being fostered by Kim Martin, who I have communicated with via text. She confirmed that the story shared online was not factual. Cyril is still available for adoption through Saving Grace. (text exchange and adoption link in comments) This is why I’ve said before, and will continue to say, please do your due diligence when donating to online rescues. Here’s what to look for: • Must be listed as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit • Status should be ACTIVE (not revoked) • Should have recent IRS filings (no recent filings = 🚩) Always check the basics: ✅ Current IRS filings (from the official IRS website only) ✅ Verifiable address ✅ Real, traceable Board of Directors Please guard your wallet and your heart. And most importantly, let’s make sure we are supporting the people truly doing the work to save these animals.
