The crucial ingredient that the fastest-growing economies in human history have in common is Australian minerals. And just as Australian minerals have made so much of the present possible, they will be at the heart of building our better future. 👇 theaustralian.com.au/business/renew…

@RouseTurner @ConversationUK The picture they chose is a bit misleading, generally it's not fishing boats but small sailing vessels and especially those with spade rudders, so not a direct association. Perhaps the rudders resemble fins or flukes of large whales but this population is known for eating tuna 🤷

@sharoz The problem is that the sex toy wasn’t entirely silicone as claimed. How about don’t try to get off during medical procedures?

Social learning requires both a learner (receiver), and an individual who is learned from (sender), but we often ignore that evolution works on both parties. In a new paper, I explore what happens when allow both sender and receiver jointly evolve: link.springer.com/article/10.100…

@willjharrison @Lincoln81 @lakens @sharoz It's about using information contained in the sample to estimate things. In a one sample t-test, you have to first calculate the mean, substacting 1 from N represents this use of the information in the mean before the t-test. In a two sampled t-test you calculate 2 means, so N-2

Does anyone have a good way of explaining *why* degrees of freedom for t-tests (or whatever) is N - 1? I’ve taught it a couple of times now and I think I over-complicate it and just leave my students confused. Cc @Lincoln81 @lakens @sharoz

This is easy for me to say because I've never submitted to NeuroImage, but I really hope all the people celebrating this huge move 1) *stop submitting to NeuroImage* and also 2) consider the implications of journal choice for junior co-authors.

All NeuroImage and NeuroImage:Reports editors have resigned over the high publication fee, and are starting a new non-profit journal imaging-neuroscience.org This comes with great regret, and a huge amount of thought and discussion- please read announcement to get more details.
