The thing is, it was obvious before the election that they were going to be bad for nature, but they have surpassed themselves: - housing targets dumped on rural areas and farmland - grey belt isn't grey, it's countryside in the green belt - habitats regulations under attack - Aarhus under attack - National Landscapes under attack - farmland around rural train stations targeted - cash-to-trash Planning & Infrastructure Bill - the most damaging grid upgrade possible (many less harmful ways) - solar on food-producing land and countryside instead of community solar on roofs & car parks and community ground source heat - no to Swift bricks - communities cut out of the planning process, when they have the best local environmental knowledge - councils no longer allowed to refuse housing over 150 homes - and that's without talking about farming
Rupert Read 🌍 🔥@GreenRupertRead

It’s time to voice an ugly truth: I’ve been talking recently {privately} with ecologists, with very senior figures in the environmental NGOs, with activists and lawyers. What they say - privately - is stark: >This Govt is even worse on nature than the Sunak & Johnson Govts<. The best comparator is with the Truss regime, with its #attackonnature. But Truss lasted less long than a lettuce. We are stuck with this lot til 2029. Whether it’s Aarhus, habitats, planning, Starmer’s proposed bonfire of regulations, and on and on and on, both the rhetoric and the reality of Labour on nature are simply dire. Why? Because, just like Truss, they will sacrifice anything for a smidgeon of potential ‘growth’. And because there is no care at all for nature in their dna. They will throw anything under the bus for some possible short-term human material benefit. Never mind that humans NEED nature too! They don’t seem aware of that. … Please repost to express your agreement.

The reality of ‘nature led construction’ is that it kills everything. Sustainable development is an oxymoron. We need to be realistic about this to accurately weigh the harm vs benefit of each development. Thats all I ask. Some developments will benefit more than harm but not all

Bonkers Forest City claim, "We're not paving over what makes this place special. We're creating more protected green space than currently exists" - by concreting over this for 1 million people, how does that work?!

The UK is one of the most nature depleted countries on 🌍 yet a 🧱is too much of a stretch for Labour to save our swifts. This symbolic 🎥 is for those who care that the existence of swifts is on the line.I hate campaigning but I’ll never give up on the birds. If you care, share🙏

Labour give so little of a shit about British wildlife that not only did they not support the absolute no-brainer of installing swift bricks on new build homes, they actively whipped their peers to vote against it, causing the amendment to fail. It’s ‘build, baby, build’ but not for exhausted migrating swifts or, it seems, any other beleaguered part of Nature in these islands.
Hannah Bourne-Taylor@WriterHannahBT

BAD NEWS💔if the vote had taken place earlier we would have won-Tories (majority) whipped YES but by the time of the vote, support had gone home just like 2 years ago. It is an AGONISING reality. Tell steve.reed.mp@parliament.uk what you think. GUTTED. Labour: what a betrayal 😡

Planning Bill Update: All of the nature friendly amendments have been rejected by the government. That means no protections for endangered species, no mitigation hierarchy, no swift bricks, no protections for irreplaceable habitats like chalk streams. This is unacceptable! 1/ 🧵

❌ The Chancellor has interfered with planning yet again to try and produce growth! Growth can’t come at nature’s expense. Read our latest briefing and tell your MP why nature protections in planning matter, send them a postcard. wildlifetrusts.org/planning-and-i…

Is anyone else worried there is nowhere near enough public / nature outcry with regards to the absolutely devastating Planning and Infrastructure Bill? Anyone who cares personally and professionally should we doing all they can to STOP PART 3 OF THE BILL.
