IT'S WITH THE DEEPEST OF HEARTS THAT THE SOUTH SUDAN COUNCIL OF CHURCHES LEARNT OF THE PASSING OF HIS LORDSHIP EMERITUS BISHOP PARIDE TABAN OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH FOLLOWING A SHORT ILLNESS IN NAIROBI KENYA. HE WAS 87 AT THE TIME OF HIS DEATH.

It was 3y today that I appeared before the Supreme Court of Sierra Leone on warrant of arrest and was held in contempt for my critique of their judgment on legal standing whose effect would reverberate across generations in Sierra Leone’s legal profession. Many thought that that day would be the end of my activism. 3 yrs on, they have discovered that my courage to speak truth to power and hold our leaders in all branches of government to account, which started two decades ago in the humble, dusty roads of Thunder Hill, Kissy was only re-engineered and refilled. 3yrs on, my activism against poor governance, injustice and oppression of rights and freedoms of the people of Sierra Leone is even more resolute. When I said ‘aye’ to this call, I understood it was going to be a long, lonely and unselfish walk. I know that democracy is not manufactured in the sky, it is curated by citizens’ decisive actions and consistent demands. I am playing my own little role towards the making of our democracy for which limbs were hacked, bodies mutilated, dignities invaded and destinies altered forever. There’s no stopping or turning back—not then, not now, not tomorrow!

Our sincere condolences on the passing of the retired bishop Emeritus Taban Paridea, South Sudanese prelate of the Catholic Church and the first leader of the South Sudan Council of Churches founded in February 1990. His effortless support to peace building is noble.
