Filmmaker and public intellectual Pa. Ranjith has contributed significantly to articulating a potential shift in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape toward an OBC versus (general + SC) polarization.
This pattern bears resemblance to the caste-based alignments that long defined Uttar Pradesh’s politics, prior to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s intervention.
However, important structural differences must be acknowledged. Tamil Nadu is not Uttar Pradesh: the OBC category constitutes a substantially larger demographic share in the state than the approximately 20 percent observed in UP. Consequently, a viable General-SC alliance could generate sufficient electoral weight to compel OBC consolidation for at least the next several electoral cycles.
The trajectory of this emerging dynamic will, of course, be determined by the outcomes of forthcoming elections. It is worth recalling the reported RSS initiative known as “Project Dravida” in the lead-up to the 2019 general elections, which was allegedly designed to portray the DMK as adopting an anti-Dalit posture, thereby facilitating the consolidation of Dalit votes in a manner analogous to strategies employed in Uttar Pradesh.
Initial experiments with this approach appear to have been tested through L. Murugan, and the project now seems to have entered a more advanced phase.Post-election developments will be particularly instructive. The responses of Pa. Ranjith and Thol. Thirumavalavan (Thiruma) especially while the DMK-led alliance remains intact merit close attention. Should Thirumavalavan choose to resign from the Lok Sabha and press for a ministerial position within the state government, such a demand would serve as a critical litmus test. It would reveal much about the internal priorities of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) while also illuminating the potential strength and limits of OBC consolidation in contemporary Tamil Nadu politics.
