Bloomstran astutely pointed out that flexibility has always been a crucial facet of Warren Buffett's capital allocation acumen. "From day one, Warren Buffett ran Berkshire [Hathaway] to grow its book value per share — and to not put the business in harm's way. And, when it was in harm's way, to pivot." $BRK.A $BRK.B "The first business they owned, obviously, was the textile business and [they] famously ran it off and eventually closed it in 1985. Several of the businesses they bought — Blue Chip Stamps, Diversified Retailing — wound up essentially being zeroes. They pivoted away from those. It's been this capital allocation at Berkshire that has allowed it to be so successful." ————— In CNBC's Buffett & Munger: A Wealth of Wisdom (2021), the two longtime business partners discuss this very subject: Munger: All the early businesses that we owned together have disappeared. Buffett: They didn't disappear. They failed. Munger: But we took so much out of them before they failed that it still worked out fine for us. Buffett: We evolved them. But, literally, the three base businesses all ended up disappearing. They went out of business. They no longer fit into society, in a sense. ————— Well, anyway, I just love these little glimpses into the early days of Berkshire Hathaway. And how Buffett and Munger turned lemons into lemonade by redeploying capital from dead-enders like Berkshire's textile operations, Diversified Retailing, Blue Chip Stamps, etc., into better businesses and brands.
