@HansGutbrod @malsukcesulo Dearest Hans. I can see why you thought what I said was in jest. Alas it wasn't. It's sad to see what seemed in 2022 like a mass awakening to Russia's colonial legacy across the former USSR - - I covered it in-depth - being hijacked and discredited beyond repair. Hence my tweet.

@malsukcesulo @atanessi Possible to strongly differ, based on what you contest here. I wasn't fully sold on @atanessi 's take, which to me seemed on the snarky side when this platform is saturated with that already, but reasonable people can disagree.

@HansGutbrod The implication being that if a woman is a provocateur, it's fine for men to punch her in the face

@atanessi there is a context to where that comes from, and I think that poster has separately claimed that the person is a known provocateur. I guess my feed looks different, but that is today's reality, that then feeds the algorithm.

@atanessi they may exist, but I have not seen anyone in my feed that justifies the assault -- as far as I can see, this is universally condemned. Rather, many ppl feel that the case and its complications present other underlying dynamics.

@NeilPHauer Just lovely to see a supposedly pro-Western liberal democratic civil society rallying around the guy who's punched a girl in the face

@atanessi Utterly insane to me that people can watch the video and present it as some sort of heroic action. Maybe if Georgian 'men' like that were more willing to fight their own riot police than random female tourists the country wouldn't be in freefall right now.

@andrewlownie A story of Burgess, while working at the BBC, commissioning translations of Zoshchenko, shows there is a world of difference between Moscow's spies then and now; used to be the likes of Guy Burgess and Kim Philby, it's the likes of Maria Butina and Anna Chapman now. Sad!

Now reading @andrewlownie Stalin's Englishman about Guy Burgess and his first impression of the USSR in 1934 is hilarious: "Whilst he loved Leningrad and pictures in the Hermitage, he found Moscow "just a Balkan town... pigs in the trams, you know"

A very short book, and all the more intriguing for that. The tone is brazenly cavalier, describing as a joke all the close calls when he was almost caught, oopsie-doopsie, haha. In a modern memoir each episode would make for a 100 tiresome pages about anxiety and sleepless nights

@VladDavidzon That's so painfully obvious that is barely worth mentionIng. There are more immediate --- and way more interesting -- similarities

Just to reiterate. Ukraine has not seen anything like this in war-time. A senior official (at least until very recently) criticising Zelensky so openly. Even ex commander in chief Zaluzhny — who was in persistent conflict with the president — has generally held his tongue.
Saint Javelin@saintjavelin

Fedorov on why people are protesting today: “Ukrainians did not take to the streets for Minister Fedorov personally. They took to the streets because when Ukraine had seized the initiative on the battlefield and in the skies, that trajectory was broken. Ukrainians can sense when decisions are no longer being made based on the values this country stands for.”

NEWS: Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy has removed defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov — the 35-year-old architect of Ukraine’s wartime defence technology drive — after just six months as part of a cabinet reshuffle, said two people familiar with the situation. Those sources said Zelenskyy was preparing to put forward the interior minister Ihor Klymenko to head the defence ministry as he prepared to unveil his new government on Thursday. ft.com/content/c2b9d7…

No clapping or cheering as Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa gives the inaugural speech at the Syrian People’s Assembly — a clear departure from the roaring ovations Assad would enjoy there. The body by design has no real power to hold the president/executive accountable, has chiefly legislative role.

Depressing to see all the pubs AI-generating their World Cup posters; if you don't have a graphic designer, then just scribble your message on a piece of paper and post a pic; anything's better than the slop
