We are creating livelihoods for the rural people in Nigeria and preventing further land damage at the same time.
Yesterday, I spoke with our field officer and his team in Benue to review our recent humanitarian response for the victims of the Yelwata massacre. This tragic event, which occurred on June 13 and 14, 2025, left at least 150 people dead and forced over 3,900 others into displacement. During the interview, the officer shared the heartbreaking reality that some families were entirely wiped out. Mr. Stephen is the sole survivor of his family; he lost both of his wives and all other family members in the attack. Beyond this personal loss, his farm produce, valued at several million Naira, was also destroyed, cutting off his only source of livelihood. The two photos attached show Mr. Stephen at different stages of our intervention. The first photo (left) was taken during our team's initial visit to assess the damage and document the level of destruction. The second photo shows him on the day we distributed relief items and cash grants to the survivors of the massacre. @RuralWatchAfrik has initiated a campaign in partnership with @GlobalGiving to further mobilize resources to address the short- and long-term needs of the affected.
