My opinion on FF14 re: consolidating combos into a single button is that you cannot simultaneously hold the opinion that (1) it has no impact on difficulty/skill, and (2) the change provides massive QoL

@Guile_Gale We've gotten less buttons consistently the last 3 expansions. I play Ninja on controller, its fine. Controller players love to ignore there's button shortcuts to jump to any hotbar 1-8 that's the same amount of button presses as accessing your back hotbar

@Rurukat @Sindalf Yeah, so 111, but they change, is better than 1-2-3-444 with no change. I need less buttons on PLD, because I've hit the limit on what a controller can do and I'm not giving myself carpal tunnel again on keyboard.

Rewatching the dev panel on evolved jobs and the cheering I hear when they announce combining combos into a single button is truly disheartening.

@Rurukat @Sindalf PLD already hits 1-2-3-444, and they only gave 444 new animations in DT. All of EW, I was in fact hitting the same button for the same animation every time.

@moonmin_03 Genuinely I don't understand how any expansion could be considered "low stakes" unless people's brains are so fried that universe ending threats are the only central conflict they can engage with

Something that I was terrified of back in 2021 was that FFXIV couldn't un-jump the shark from Endwalker's finale and we wouldn't have space for relatively low stakes expansions like heavensward and stormblood and 7.5 really brought those fears back

@Bit_Azure I do love most of the ideas outside of pvp combos though so I'm hopeful that it's a good baseline, it's mostly whether or not the base will be interesting enough to last 2.5 years for it's next iteration

@Bit_Azure My biggest concern as someone who LOVED StB MCH is that it went from the most satisfying burst in the game for me to being incredibly boring because it switched from needing to hit every button on your bar to a 2 button spam, and that seems to be the direction of the jobs shown

I'm probably going to hold off any conclusive discussions of Evolved Mode for now until we see every job's gameplay and finished gauges at JP Fanfest. There's too much in the air and while I'm skeptical (given Viper's gameplay) there's just too many unknowns at the moment.

While we're talking about the current story discourse I don't think they *need* to kill or not kill a scion. They should write the story they'd feel be best it shouldn't be designed to feed players wants. Death is an easy out, but there are more ways you can raise stakes

I do have hope that the feedback received now will result in adjustments before launch, I'm just worried at the moment that the baseline is going to be decent, but not enough to last 2.5 years for it's next iteration

Not to be too doomer about the FFXIV evolved changes but I sort of wonder to all the people who think it's a good change to have all our battle skills available on 6 buttons, isn't the lack of buttons the main complaint when tackling ARR content?

@rinonbanana It was really funny hearing them say that white mages find hitting the same spell monotonous so their fix was to change it so that they're hitting 1-1-1-1-1 but the animation changes every other 1

Many thoughts about this job design shift. Some good some bad; honestly the biggest holdouts were that WHM seemed utterly sauceless and that they LOOOVED just using Inner Release-alikes as a burst for every job. These situational skills are very cool, though

My biggest concern with the blueprint idea is if the jobs will feel fulfilling enough to last 2.5 years for the next building block. I love the idea of contextual actions but high APM means nothing if I'm hitting the same 4 buttons

I do like the issues they're tackling but the way in which they're doing it leaves a lot to be desired. It feels like a good blueprint for things to build off of, but how many times have we heard that about systems in this game at this point?

FFXIV Evolve mode feels like 2 large steps forward and 2 giant steps backwards and I'm really wondering where we'll end up at. Hearing "this opens up new fast paced combos" and seeing them hit 1-1-2-1-1-2 leaves me feeling extremely underwhelmed
