@anruuc44 @News_Letter There'd be an equal demand in loyalist areas for the council to erect signs with the union jack or the orange order logo on them. Demand isnt the issue. It's whether the council should meet the demand and mark territory for one section of the community so as to perpetuate ghettos

@RussellThen @News_Letter The lawful process to create signs which represent English & Gaeilge placenames is used because there is demand You must realise is the era of cultural suppression of Gaeilge is over Hundreds, if not thousands, of people from Unionist & Protestant backgrounds learn the language

@anruuc44 @News_Letter The difference is the council is funding and allowing their signs to mark territory. Irish is one sided there won't be any unionist area voting to erect them - which is why the bar has been set at 15%.

@RussellThen @News_Letter Further, the erection of DUAL language signage follows a consultative, lawfully mandated process in accordance with international best practice on minority language protections True territory marking is using ONE sided symbolism & emblems exclusive of others in a shared space

@anruuc44 @News_Letter English is spoken by both communities - that's parity. Adding Irish is clearly not for linguistic reasons. Its about marking territory. It does indeed expose the real issue of supremacy - ensuring these estates are permanently marked as Irish/nationalist so theres no integration

@RussellThen @News_Letter Adding Gaeilge to an English sign is parity. That's manifestly obvious This issue has a silver lining because it exposes supremacy and the inability, by some insecure people, to accept other cultural expressions, even those that are indigenous to the island & pre-date English.

@anruuc44 @News_Letter English is the language of both communities and is therefore neutral. Adding Irish is at the behest of one community to mark territory and perpetuate division. Not something ABC Council should be doing.

@News_Letter False headline The signs are DUAL language - English & Gaeilge Reflecting the contemporary majority language & the indigenous Gaeilge...spoken by increasing numbers & appreciated by the maj. in NI This headline is an attempt to take the piss out of the public They see it!

@TadhgMaire @annie_mcginley Don't be daft. If councils started putting union jacks on signs if anybody objected is that anti British racism? Signs should be neutral and as everybody speaks English that makes them neutral.

@annie_mcginley The flags are not erected by the council. The road signs are. That's the difference. The council shouldn't be erecting divisive signs but rather encouraging communal integration.

@RussellThen English arrived via plantation; Irish predates it by millennia. Furthermore, councils routinely tolerate illegal, intimidating loyalist flags on public street furniture without removal. Pretending English is "neutral" while ignoring flag territory marking is peak denial !

@annie_mcginley English is the spoken language of choice of the vast majority of people on the island of Ireland. The ROI didn't choose to speak Irish when they broke away from the UK. Putting Irish on signs is not for linguistic purposes but for marking territory and perpetuating division

@annie_mcginley English is the language of both communities therefore the sign is neutral and does what it is intended to do. The addition of Irish is clearly making territory. ABC Council don't erect loyalist or republican flags. U

@RussellThen Dual language means shared space—both languages are visibly equal, not exclusive. If marking territory is the actual concern, consistency demands calling for the removal of the countless Loyalist flags saturating the area, which truly enforce sectarian boundaries.

@Jmehlh @JamieBrysonLLB EU laws not Irish laws. The ROI will be paying more in benefits and subsidies to take on NI than the new taxes it will receive.

@stephenirwin80 @JamieBrysonLLB You miss the point. It's the police response to when republicans/loyalists break the law compared to when ordinary people break the law.

@JamieBrysonLLB You do realise that some of the Protestors could have been at the Bobby Storey funeral? It's not an Orange and Green issue. Embarrassing.

Fair point from fuel protestors: they receive fines within hours, yet PSNI/PPS took no action at all in respect of the mass law breaking at the IRA show of strength which took place for the funeral of terrorist leader Bobby Storey. Two tier policing is not an illusion.

@FrankFitz33 @hmackers @mooreholmes24 So your evidence is a QUB report from an unknown author that stated unionist dominated councils prioritised their own voters? This justified Catholics killing their protestant neighbours? But when nationalist councils do similar protestants should suck it up? and I'm biased?

@RussellThen @hmackers @mooreholmes24 Well you’re certainly not neutral - you’re denying facts left, right and center. You just can’t accept there was an anti-Catholic sentiment in ‘your wee country’ for 50+ years - you’re in the minority. And if Scotland & Wales can have bi-lingual signs, so can we so suck it up!

Unionists are rightly proud of their historic contribution both to the Union and specifically Northern Ireland. A proud people. Industrial. Efficient. Diligent. Builders. In early 1920’s, they built a new institution from scratch. Against all the odds, with limited resources, surrounded by adversaries. The story of Northern Ireland’s beginning is a special one. War to the South, scepticism to the East, and enemies within. What was built in 1921 has endured, and continues to endure, even grow, 105 years on. The place we each call home was built by Unionists. And it is the only place on this island, where all creeds have shown they can coexist and thrive.

@Lorcan1966 @rtenews Been through all this in NI. The ringleaders will be made an example of and the rest will give up rather than lose their livelihoods, assets and freedom. Fairly easy for the Garda to identify whose organising it

@FrankFitz33 @hmackers @mooreholmes24 In the opinion of a queen's university professor. Just because your a university professor doesn't make you neutral. Are you suggesting nationalist dominated councils don't prioritise their voters? Erecting Irish language signs where they're not wanted for instance?

@FrankFitz33 @hmackers @mooreholmes24 Even your article acknowledges it was the entire working class comprising both communities that had poor housing. You think a queen's university paper is unbiased 😂 especially nowadays with the university controlled by militant republicanism

@FrankFitz33 @hmackers @mooreholmes24 You've presented no evidence of discrimination by the NI government and your chatgpt screenshot has presented no evidence either. My comment was that without evidence your assertion wouldn't even pass the PPS as a viable case never mind make it into court

If you don’t know what you’re talking about, it’s best to keep your mouth shut Court? You taking me to court then? What’s the charge - presenting facts you don’t like? 😂
