@cantonmeow I tell you what PLTR is bad money. It's an unethical company that is detrimental to all of our freedoms. You may make the money but that money carries no blessings and will vanish as quickly as it came.

Again, the "penalty" here is for having one employee do two kinds of work in one day. Do you get paid for two days of work if you have to do two different kinds of work during the day?
roxy@residentsparkie

@jbarro Don't mismanage their schedules and keep the trains adequately staffed and there's no penalty pay for making one guy do the work of two. It's that easy!

@BLET so your LIRR employees make on average $114k/year. All they need is high school diplomas, no cost of higher education, and now ya’ll want more?!?!? Selfish! I’m a physical therapist, 10 years of experience and maxed out at 110k and owe 300k in loan debt. Fuck off

This yimby has been mad for days that blue collar workers at LIRR earn $200k. $200k is the amount needed to rent a $5k/month apartment, market rate for a 1 bed in Manhattan. I’m supposed to think train engineers deserve to live in the city less than Yimby’s do? Why?

I think it's fine for LIRR workers to ask for 200k, or more. Billionaires have been telling us for years that we need to capitulate to their preferred tax rates or else—and our government concedes to them. Why should the workers who can actually bring large swaths of this city to a halt be expected to not wield that power? Why do we accept the people at the very, very top—who have nothing in common with us—using leverage to get ahead, but not the people one tax bracket up who live and work in our communities?

they were trying to secure a fair contract for three years, the state conceded in three days. this is why they dont want you to unionize your workplace
Governor Kathy Hochul@GovKathyHochul

Tonight, the @MTA reached a fair deal with the five LIRR unions that delivers raises for workers while protecting riders and taxpayers. I’m pleased to announce that phased LIRR service will resume beginning tomorrow at noon.

@hasanthehun Bro this one you don't want to be on their side. The LIRR union is older guys completely hording all of the benefits and wealth while the younger union members get fucked over. They are the one railroad/union that everyone in the industry hates on equally

@hasanthehun You need to look into this more. LIRR workers were already being paid very well and were offered an increase. Union labor isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be.

We could reduce the salaries of LIRR workers by 20% and they'd still be FAR better off than the average American. The fact that they're demanding a double-digit raise and believe they should get outrageously generous overtime pay is pure, unadulterated greed.

So much discourse about the LIRR strike is just classic petite bourgeois jealousy and insecurity. They’re mad that railroad workers who don’t have a college degree make more money than they do as white collar workers
urbanist slop hq@SlopHq

77 LIRR employees made over $250,000 in a single year, almost all of it through overtime stacking enabled by work rules nobody is allowed to renegotiate. the unions aren't striking for a living wage. they're striking for the right to keep gaming the schedule like it's 2003

@HabCorpLinguist It's really bad because they dont just stop the tubes. They take down the overground traffic with them. Because everyone has to take a cab or the bus, I could tell within 2 minutes after walking out of my door that there was another tube strike today. (The roads were packed)

@HabCorpLinguist They have their own LIRR equivalent actually. Tube drivers make around 70k GBP. Notably more than avg and median London income (around 35-40k). And yes, they still strike 5 times a year.

@HabCorpLinguist Being a unionized public sector worker sounds sweet, all that money for easy work. The only downside is the knowledge that all you have comes from the extortion of the public.

Has the LIRR strike news made its way over to the Brits yet? I feel like if they hear people are debating whether $140k+ is enough money to punch tickets on a train, they'll have a stroke.

🚨As a Long Islander, I'm beyond disgusted‼️ 250,000 Long Islanders couldn't even get on the train to work today because Governor Hochul's MTA and the LIRR couldn't get a deal done with the workers. They're asking for 3.6% raises, and somehow that couldn't get resolved. Meanwhile, Hochul had no problem finding $5 billion for migrant healthcare, hotels, and lawyers, plus another $4 billion to push Mayor Mamdani's socialist wishlist, like government-run grocery stores and "free" buses. But when it comes to keeping our trains running for the people who actually live and work here? Crickets. No leadership, no urgency. Now our region is bleeding an estimated $61 million a day because of this mess.
