As I close out my time photographing the semi-wild Welsh ponies of the Black Mountains and Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, I wanted to share a small collection of moments captured high amongst these beautiful hills. Over the past days I have spent hours quietly observing herds around places such as Twmpa, watching newly born foals finding their legs, stallions moving across the ridgelines, and family groups grazing amongst the bilberry, mountain grasses and steep valleys that define this landscape. What continues to stand out to me is just how important these ponies are to the uplands. Their natural grazing patterns help shape and maintain these habitats, supporting biodiversity and helping prevent the hills from becoming overgrown and dominated by scrub. They are not simply part of the scenery here, they are active custodians of the landscape. There is something very special about watching these ponies living freely in such a raw and exposed environment, completely in tune with the land around them. Spending time amongst them has been both grounding and inspiring, and another reminder of the important role equines continue to play in conservation grazing across our wild landscapes. #snelgrove #horsephotography #welshpony #breconbeacons
