I don’t understand why this is surprising to anyone. In July 2023, I was addressing a US Congressional Delegation (close to 15 members of Congress) that was in Kigali - at their invitation. They asked me the question about Rwanda’s presence in the DRC. I said I do not have the intelligence resources to confirm or deny with certainty its presence there. However, I said, I believed that given the existential threat posed by the FDLR, it would be irresponsible and suicidal if Rwanda’s troops were not in the DRC - a dereliction of duty. I said if I were to put myself in the position of the person responsible for this decision, I would have deployed troops there. I also said I would deny that I deployed there because of implications of international law. Why? The cost of denying is too small compared to the threat of lives at stake. This cost-benefit analysis is what any serious leader would do.

BREAKING: A year after he told me he doesn’t know if Rwandan troops are in DRC, President Kagame explains why: “Technically it’s not an answer I should have given but it would not take me to court.” He says Congo must take responsibility for its issues

Today, I shared this letter with every Fellow of the African Food Fellowship about how we’ll build the next chapter of African food systems leadership - together. If you’re working on food, climate, entrepreneurship, finance, policy, or innovation in Africa and want to be part of this journey, let’s connect.

Panafricanism starts with humility and respect for African countries in their diversity. Every nation on this continent has its own history, successes and challenges. We should then celebrate our respective achievements, address our weaknesses, while learning from those of our neighbours, without pretence or arrogance. And Rwanda, which is still a developing country, greatly benefits from the sharing of experience with fellow AU member States, to build the Africa we want.
Ignatius R. Kabagambe@KabagambeI

THE DIFFERENCE IS A PLAN, NOT LUCK Two #ICT ministers from the same region tell two very different stories: one speaks with the confidence of a government that has empowered her; the other reflects a mindset #Africa must outgrow, waiting for solutions from elsewhere. If, in ten years, #Rwanda stands above its peers, it will not be by chance. It will be by design. That is the Pan-African lesson: dignity is built through intention, leadership, and ownership, not expectation.

I have failed God more times than I can count. I have known better and still chosen wrong. And yet He still calls me His, still forgives my sins, and still stays. Grace like that wrecks me in the best way and leaves me undone with gratitude.

One of the things Rwanda education must do is to create a new culture of public discourse that is able to engage issues/content rather than “icyihishe inyuma.” Only Seers (abapfumu) are able to see icyihishe inyuma!

Hello @nathmunya, I hear your call for solutions and responsibility. However, your statement can easily come across as asking young people to tone it down or stay silent. Many youths feel that today’s harsh realities (unemployment, cost of living, self expression, etc.) are often minimized in the name of indangagaciro. When young people express frustration, instead of first acknowledging the pain and urgency behind the message, the response is too often about “tone,” “respect,” or “elders,” (ngo basuzugura abakuru kandi si indangagaciro). That reaction pushes many into silence, and silence doesn’t solve problems; it deepens them. Don’t even get me started with those folks (especially Gen X) who still pull out bible verses or H.E.’s quotes like jump-scares to silence people. I think we don’t view “indangagaciro” in the same way. Indangagaciro should not mean suppressing emotion or sanitizing lived experiences. It should also include listening, empathy, and allowing space for uncomfortable truths. Expression is not disrespect. Frustration is not failure. Speaking out is not rage bait by default. Youth can work toward solutions and speak loudly about what isn’t working. In fact, honest expression is often the starting point of real solutions. Asking young people to constantly self-censor while realities remain unchanged risks widening the gap between generations. We all want progress. That begins with listening; especially when the message is uncomfortable.
Nathalie Munya@nathmunya

Sorry a little late to the discussion. It is good to express your frustration about the challenges of life like youth unemployment, cost of living (the hallmark and strength of youth) but the tone was definitely unnerving. The world is experiencing very challenging times and we are not spared. As a young person you aren’t responsible for “toning down” your frustration but indangagaciro zacu zidusaba gushishoza neza nokugira umutima wo gushaka ibisubizo. This country is built on that very concept. With the social media trend yo gutwika what is a cry for help can be quickly co-opted negatively. We must always be the generation that finds solutions apana abantu batukana kuri social media. And us older folks must lead the way. I hope all of us practice refusing to be rage baited all the time. That toxic energy that says nothing works in this country must be rejected every time even as we give rightful feedback. Let’s roll up our sleeves to solve these problems. The real activist says what I can do, not how many followers did I get today. Remember we have faced harder challenges in this country and overcome - that is the basis of our optimism and the driver of our hard work. Mugire amahoro!

SAD BUT TRUTH: • Graduates move from one unpaid internship to another. • Rent in Kigali keeps rising faster than wages. • Transport & food costs take up most of already small incomes. • Bank loans policies are somehow harder, making even those with solid ideas still struggle to access affordable capital. • For many young people, social media is often the only space left to be heard after doors remain closed, applications go unanswered, and systems move slowly.
