The Math Behind the MSTR 10-Delta Strategy The strategy—starting by selling 40 DTE MSTR 10 delta covered calls and rolling out weekly, for a credit, to maintain ~40 days to expiration—is a strategy based on mathematical probabilities. For sake of argument, based on MSTR's typical 80-100% IV, a 10-delta trade is roughly a 1.4-1.5 sigma move on MSTR. This means that if you hold and never roll, there is a <6% probability that the short call will expire ITM and that you would be forced to sell your shares. But since the strategy involves rolling each week, and up when the stock is moving up, the reality is that being assigned (losing your shares) is much less than 6% from the point of the cycle's initiation—the first week you sold the first 10 delta. As a matter of principle, you should either be a long term investor in a company/ticker you believe in, and/or, if you want to be a trader, you should trade based on mathematical probabilities. If you're not trading based on probabilities, you're probably just feeling and guessing. Feeling and guessing does not have a strong track record of success. The diagram below is normal distribution. Stock returns don't follow a perfect normal distribution in reality — they exhibit fat tails, skewness, and jumps. However, the Black-Scholes model still assumes log-normal stock prices (i.e., normally distributed log returns) to calculate theoretical option prices for both calls and puts, whether you're long or short. If you want to invest, invest. If you want to trade for income, use math and trade based on probabilities of success.
