After dealing with the criminal justice system for the past 12 years, and still dealing with it today, I have come to believe that justice is often available to those who can afford it. For the average person who cannot pay for an experienced attorney or a well respected law firm, the choices are limited. They either rely on a court appointed attorney, whom many people believe may not provide the level of advocacy they need, or they spend countless hours learning the law and represent themselves pro se. I do not believe it should work this way. Justice should be accessible to everyone, regardless of financial resources. Instead, I see a system that is deeply flawed and, in many respects, corrupted by financial incentives. Too often, it appears that money has a greater influence on outcomes than fairness. I am not saying that every attorney is dishonest or unwilling to fight for a client. There are lawyers who work hard and provide excellent representation. From my own experience, however, it often seems that the strongest advocacy is driven by professional recognition, financial compensation, or some other personal incentive. I have yet to encounter someone within the legal system who consistently does the right thing simply because it is the right thing to do. In my experience, there always seems to be another motive behind it.
