About a week ago, I had the great opportunity to attend USENIX FAST 2025 and present some of our ongoing work optimizing security protocols for cloud storage.
It was my first time attending—big thanks to the organizers for putting together a fantastic program. 🎉
A high-level summary for anyone who might be interested:
Protecting the integrity of data stored in the cloud is an important element of cloud security. However, integrity checking protocols introduce significant performance overheads—and those overheads increase both as our security needs grow and as our systems scale. Our work takes a first-principles approach to: 1) characterizing the root cause of integrity overheads to understand performance bottlenecks, and 2) breaking through performance ceilings with optimization techniques and adaptive data structure design. We looked at block storage in the context of confidential virtual machines but the insights transfer broadly—exciting times ahead for confidential computing!
Check it out!
