There are many books and articles useful in thinking about creating a game. One example is The Design of Everyday Things by Don Norman will help me remember that the affordance of and in the game are important. #cit600games @unlvpg

@MAXIMUMunlv @unlvpg I like the idea of building a scavenger hunt w/ the rest of the teachers that our entire school can participate in. We are a small school, so it is doable, & I could build a badging system that could translate into printed certificates that so academic achievement. #cit600games

@unlvpg Serious games are a little hard in my setting. I would need to have every research article we've read on hand, a detailed lesson plan, & data collection proving it's impact on standardized testing to use them. Wardens don't like things that look like play. #cit600games

@Marydlv8 @unlvpg I agree. Many students would enjoy the creative aspect of creating a game. This could also serve as an assessment tool for that student to tell the teacher what he has learned on a topic to share with other students by playing the game.#cit600games @unlvpg

@SARiesselmann @unlvpg It is challenging but I also think a lot of the work always falls on the teacher to create these games. Give the task to students and have them create their own games using technology. They could use easy software like Scratch to a simple PowerPoint. @unlvpg #cit600games

Educational games using technology is challenging. Considering: audience, flow, aestetics, learning targets, the four elements of a game, motivation to play, and maybe even an engaging story. Also very important, up to date equipment in our schools. @unlvpg #cit600games

@JamesSm33264742 @unlvpg teaching students that there are many creative ways to learn how to learn. Games are one way to learn material or to use critical thinking skills to strategize as you navigate material. Often you have to think ahead a few steps to out maneuver an opponent. #cit600games

#cit600games @unlvpg @JamesSm33264742 Games are a valuable source of learning in the classroom. For instance, games can help with the students' learning of “history” and “anatomy & physiology” since they have shown to increase the students’ retention of material.

@JamesSm33264742 @unlvpg Many teachers don't know where or how to find quality edu games. They may not even think to make their own, don't recognize the value of games for learning or are short on time. These things need to be addressed to add gaming into the classroom as a serious option. #cit600games

@unlvpg at the library our computers and software are updated every few years. It doesn't seem the case when it comes to our schools. I wonder how this affects the kinds of programs that can be operated. #cit600games

I work at the library and our computers and software are updated pretty regularly. That doesn't seem the case for schools. I wonder how much this affects the type of programs the can be run.

@unlvpg Here is a picture of the board & pieces I created for my game Master the Craft. I realized that a week isn't a lot of time to create the kind of game I like to play, so I had to adjust a lot of aspects of my master vision, but I still think it came out well. #cit600games

@JamesSm33264742 @unlvpg I find that interesting as well. Also interesting is that gamers are learning real life skills like collaborating "at bigger and more complex scales" Jane McGonigal (2011).

#cit600games @unlvpg @JamesSm33264742 I can see how playing "Red Rover" as a child could help develop my affective and social well-being. But I never thought that playing the game "Red Rover" could elicit beneficial effects on our cognitive skills while playing the game.

@DRWatUNLV @unlvpg I can definitely bring these ideas to our libraries. Libraries have the opportunity to introduce ideas and bring innovative ways of delivering these. Games, especially in getting students interested in STEAM occupations. #cit600games

#cit600games @unlvpg The idea of using gaming as a way to create worldwide connection to sporting events (i.e. Olympics) and global problems (i.e. oil shortages) is impressive. We teachers should be doing this as part of school culture.

One way to use social games that came to mind is to give seniors relief from the lonliness many of them feel. They may not be able to get out much but the social aspect/affordance can be had in their rooms using media tools #cit600games

I felt so empowered as I read the last two chapters of our book Reality is Broken by Jane McGonigal. I started thinking about how collaborating with groups, cities, nations and using a game format to do so, could make a difference and and improve our lifes. #cit600games
