My grandad was really peak grandad. It's not like he was someone who would reach out in trouble, he didn't try to connect most of the time. But he built me my first bike. He carved and painted a magic wand for me. When we had to move in with my granny because of how unwell mom was and we had nothing- had to leave all my toys and clothes and photos and everything behind in a different country- he took the box for the massive Christmas tree granny had and went to the shops and bought stuff until it was full and put the box under the Christmas tree. He babysat me while my mom went on trial shifts. He took me fishing and we stayed there for hours until I caught a fish. There was the carnival trip- that's a whole thing, a really eventful day. He tried to help me when I was having panic attacks the year before I met my wife. We walked halfway to Stratford Upon Avon along the canals, just in accepting silence, then when it became obvious I was too tired to keep going after hours, he bought me a Magnum and took me back home(I can't remember how). Typical overambitious but well meaning expedition. I cannot breathe for how angry and hollow i feel at his loss
