@PhilosopherPres It’s less about his politics and more about showing that honor for the great men of the South used to be found even among the most powerful and influential.
English

@SCVCamp79 I don’t think you want to be quoting FDR just saying
English

“We recognize Robert E. Lee as one of our greatest American Christians and one of our greatest American gentlemen.”
—Franklin Delano Roosevelt—
The Ways of A Gentleman@Gentleman_Ways
Name a great man from history who epitomized what it means to be a gentleman. I’ll start: George Washington

@HDemarest66726 It’s an anecdotal remark, but yes it is attributed to him. The Scotch-Irish were not purely Gaelic or Celtic though, since the Borderers had Anglo admixture.
English

@SCVCamp79 Didn’t General Lee say that his best soldiers were “The Scot’s who came to our country by way of Ireland”
English

@Will_Tanner_1 “People who talk of further retaliation and punishment… either do not conceive of the suffering endured already or they are heartless and unfeeling and wish to stay at home out of danger while the punishment is being inflicted.”

English

Grant interceded to fight the Reconstruction regime, which wanted to try both Lee and Jefferson Davis, along with other Confederate leaders, for treason
Grant fought them particularly hard on their attempts to persecute Lee, as he understood the peace he struck with Lee forbade such barbarities
Whatever his other faults, he was a man of his word, and a gentleman in that regard, which is much of why he was liked
He also wasn't a war criminal like Sheridan or Sherman, who delighted in destroying civilian property

Sunny@sunnyright
When Grant died, his pallbearers included Confederate Generals Buckner and Johnston.

@chucksz @LookAwayCSA So true, you have to be a pig to disrespect the Battle Flag.
English

@TMarckesano @1776Dca @Geiger_Capital Sounds like you’ve been struck in a nerve. Keep being angry, we’ll keep fighting for the vision of Washington and Roosevelt.
English

@SCVCamp79 @1776Dca @Geiger_Capital I honestly dont give a rats ass about how backward and racist people are that live in the majority of the United States - i live in a region known for its beauty and mixed cultures with many languages - you can stick to the slime
