As PM you have & are leading our country with prudence & wisdom. However, these 7 appeals lack credibility & are uninspiring. No politician claiming to lead us is seen heeding to these appeals. A simple extension of a road is inaugurated with pomp & wasteful expenditure. A CM drives on it in a fancy Mercedes car. You have not told us what steps your government is taking to overcome the challenges of the Middle East war. Corruption today is disgustingly widespread. Inefficiencies in govt offices are back to pre 2014 days. We are happy that you are winning elections. But let it not make you feel like a Vishwaguru; only to tell people how they should live. Don’t forget that people elected you to act and deliver. Not give sermons. Above all, beware of taking people for granted. @mygovindia

A welcome and overdue course correction by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in restoring the full six-stanza rendition of Vande Mataram to its rightful place at official ceremonies. For decades, political compromise diluted what was meant to be a civilisational invocation of the motherland. A nation that reclaimed its sovereignty in 1947 need not continue to inherit the anxieties of that era. Cultural confidence cannot be permanently hostage to historical concessions. Mandating the complete version at constitutional occasions - from the unfurling of the Tricolour to the arrival of the President and Governors - reinforces that national identity is not negotiable. It is lived, sung, and honoured in full. A confident republic does not trim its heritage to fit the sensitivities of the past. It stands by it unapologetically.

There were 60000 people expected in Perth today. They would have looked forward to a great Sunday for weeks. Even if the batting was unusually frenetic, and the game was extraordinarily gripping, a track that allows a game to end in 2 days isn't fair to the stakeholders of the game.

In the 90s, our idea of the intellectual was Prannoy Roy. For every election he’d have a panel with his stephens and DSE friends who’d use words like “caste calculus”. Of course the phrase meant nothing but the use of calculus immediately gave credence to everything they said. I even for a brief while thought I would become a “sociologist”. (My mom and dad put paid to such ideas by telling me that, they could handle many of my misdemeanours but having a son in humanities is where they’d draw the line) And the blue eyed boy of guys who could say words like “caste calculus” was Lalu. Lalu was how a stephens grad imagined india. Loud, uncouth and a bit of harmless fun. He of course got extra points for being “secular”. What if the old chap was a little bit barmy. He was secular. And even as the old boys from DU gave cover fire, Lalu indulged in all manner of dacoity, rape and murder. Today, everything has changed. The studios are owned by gujrati businessmen who could go easy on the carbs. The studio anchors are now, to everyone’s shock and dismay Indian. And most of all, the electorate shockingly, seems to like things like law and order a bit more than things like secularism. A lot more actually. To the point where they have kept secularism’s blue eyed boy out of power for 25 years. In these 25 years, the bengali intellectual lost. The fat gujrati businessman won and Bihar lives to fight another day.
