Local Stories of Action: lnkd.in/ehY2B3HN The challenges facing our communities and our planet can feel overwhelming — but real change starts with people who are willing to step forward. Video: youtu.be/qmGDSGkWodI Gregory Doran, a volunteer with Drogheda Town FC and a participant in the 2025 SDG Advocate Training, shows how meaningful climate action can begin at community level. Motivated to move beyond “whataboutism” and focus on practical solutions, Gregory started at home by reducing his household carbon footprint. He installed solar panels, switched to an electric vehicle, and introduced wildlife-friendly initiatives to support local biodiversity. But Gregory didn’t stop there. Through his involvement with Drogheda Town FC, he helped guide the club on its own sustainability journey. The club installed 39 solar panels, replaced diesel-powered halogen floodlights with energy-efficient LED lighting, and introduced heat pumps that reduced gas use by 40%. Biodiversity features such as hedgerows and wildlife boxes were also added to the grounds, creating space for nature while strengthening the club’s environmental commitment. Many of these improvements were supported by grants, helping the club reduce its environmental impact while also improving its long-term financial sustainability. Gregory credits the SDG Advocate Training with deepening his understanding of global challenges and giving him the confidence to take meaningful local action. His experience shows that positive change doesn’t have to start at a national or global level—it can begin in our homes, our clubs, and our communities. If Gregory’s story inspires you, you can take the next step too. Join the SDG Advocate Training 2026 with Development Perspectives and learn how to turn your passion for sustainability into real action in your community. Louth. Created in collaboration with local traders and community members, the project explores the evolving role of markets — honouring their rich past while reimagining their future in a changing society. Supported through a shared learning, action-based programme, Marie has refined her research, strengthened local partnerships, and shaped a creative process grounded in community voices rather than a single finished artwork. Aligned with the SDGs — including Sustainable Cities and Communities, Responsible Consumption, Climate Action and Life on Land — Market Stories shows how arts and culture can spark dialogue, strengthen identity, and inspire positive local change. After completing the #SDGAdvocateTraining last year, Vincent James Donovan — retired school principal and dedicated member of the Donore Heritage & Environmental Group — has turned learning into lasting local impact. Vincent successfully spearheaded “The Linear Garden,” an inspiring biodiversity project near the Newgrange Visitor Centre. What was once an overgrown bank along the L1601 road is now a 300-metre eco-friendly pathway and wildlife corridor, reconnecting two mature woodland areas and creating space for nature to thrive. The project goes even further — integrating sustainable agriculture and community support. Oats were harvested to provide straw for a historic local thatched cottage, all while protecting the soil biome by avoiding inorganic fertilisers. Vincent has also championed eco-friendly materials and contributed to the Meath Biodiversity Policy, helping ensure that developments such as the proposed Boyneside Greenway align with global sustainability standards. This is what the SDG Advocate Training is all about — empowering people to take meaningful action in their own communities. Interested in becoming an SDG Advocate and making an impact where you live? SDG 15: Life on Land Information Pack saolta.com/information-pa… Life on land is essential for our wellbeing – from forests and peatlands to pollinators and wildlife that keep ecosystems thriving. In Ireland, only 11.6% of our land is forested, and many native species, including bees, butterflies and freshwater fish, are now under serious threat. Protecting biodiversity means protecting our future. Through conservation, sustainable land use, and community action, we can restore ecosystems and safeguard nature for generations to come. Every action counts – whether it’s supporting conservation efforts, learning about biodiversity, or simply respecting nature where you live. #SDG15 #LifeOnLand #Biodiversity #ProtectNature #Sustainability #IrelandSDGs #ClimateAction

Riveting, extraordinary and brutally honest speech by Mark Carney, Canada's prime minister. God, I wish we would have European leaders like this. Here's an excerpt: In 1978, the Czech dissident Václav Havel, later president, wrote an essay called “The Power of the Powerless,” and in it he asked a simple question: how did the communist system sustain itself? And his answer began with a greengrocer. Every morning, the shopkeeper places a sign in his window: “Workers of the world unite.” He doesn’t believe in it. No one does. But he places the sign anyway to avoid trouble, to signal compliance, to get along. And because every shopkeeper on every street does the same, the system persists — not through violence alone, but through the participation of ordinary people in rituals they privately know to be false. Havel called this living within a lie. The system’s power comes not from its truth, but from everyone’s willingness to perform as if it were true. And its fragility comes from the same source. When even one person stops performing, when the greengrocer removes his sign, the illusion begins to crack. Friends, it is time for companies and countries to take their signs down. For decades, countries like Canada prospered under what we called the rules-based international order. We join its institutions, we praised its principles, we benefited from its predictability. And because of that, we could pursue values-based foreign policies under its protection. We knew the story of the international rules-based order was partially false, that the strongest would exempt themselves when convenient, that trade rules were enforced asymmetrically, and we knew that international law applied with varied rigor, depending on the identity of the accused or the victim. This fiction was useful, and American hegemony in particular helped provide public goods, open sea lanes, a stable financial system, collective security, and support for frameworks for resolving disputes. So we placed the sign in the window. We participated in the rituals, and we largely avoided calling out the gaps between rhetoric and reality. This bargain no longer works. Let me be direct. We are in the midst of a rupture, not a transition. Read/listen in full: globalnews.ca/news/11620877/…

Let's be clear. Israel is a rogue state , which has ignored International Law. The EU has stood idly by and implemented next to nothing in terms of sanctions. The lack of any meaningful political leadership clearly illustrates the vacuous hypocrisy of the EU ( sadly).
