Last week, the SEDC Senate Committee endorsed the Commission's 2026 proposed budget.
Built on the N140BN fiscal allocation in Nigeria's 2026 Federal Budget, the "Budget of Consolidation, Renewed Resilience and Shared Prosperity,” the budget focuses on key infrastructure projects (preliminary work on Regional rail, gas pipelines, etc), including capitalisation of the South East Investment Company, Agro-Development, the South East Venture Capital Programme, Grassroot Sports Development, the M.I Okpara Fellowship, and more.
Execution begins now.

Last week in Enugu, beyond the policy conversations and high-level dialogue, what stayed with me most was the energy of the young people in the room.
They were engaged, asking tough questions, building networks, and thinking seriously about the future of our region.
As we move from SEV2050 to execution, we must build systems that match their ambition and energy.
The work begins.

7: Stakeholders agreed that @SEDCgov should embark on a mega projects via PPP to actualize RAILWAY Project connecting all South East states capitals; Road connecting capitals, a MEGA HOSPITAL as @Dr_NRC_Azodoh put it to reduce medical tourism.
-(a): @SEDCgov should not be involved in boreholes, schools renovation etc that state and local governments can fix.
8: @SEDCgov must align with the National Agenda of the President @officialABAT
9: Investors abroad should approach @SEDCgov for expression of Interest. So many areas to be covered.

MY SPEECH AT THE SOUTH EAST DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION’S VISION 2050 REGIONAL STAKEHOLDER FORUM
Reimagining the South East as a Unified Economic Bloc
By Peter Mbah
I am honoured to host you here for the South East Vision 2050 Regional Stakeholder Forum. Indeed, coming barely one week after the signing of the concession agreement for the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, this is a particularly significant moment for us.
I commend the South East Development Commission (SEDC) for the intellectual rigour and institutional foresight behind this initiative; I appreciate the collaboration of the Ministry of Regional Development, and the Office of the Vice President, whose involvement firmly situates this conversation within Nigeria’s national development framework.
I warmly acknowledge His Excellency, Senator Kashim Shettima, GCON, whose presence reinforces the principle that regional development thrives best when it is nationally enabled and institutionally supported.
Sustainable regional development does not occur in isolation. It requires a national leadership that understands diversity, equity, and long-term planning. In this regard, I must recognise the leadership of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, under whose watch Nigeria is witnessing a renewed emphasis on structural reform and regional balance.
The creation and strengthening of regional development commissions is a strategic signal that development must be territorially-inclusive and economically rational. For the South East, this is significant. It reflects a federal posture that recognises the region not merely as a political constituency, but as a critical economic and human capital asset to Nigeria.
The President’s approach provides the policy space and institutional backing for the South East to plan long-term, invest smartly, and integrate effectively into national growth priorities.
Let me say from the start: this gathering here is not to decorate a document, and we also did not gather here to produce another communiqué that looks impressive – but changes nothing. I am here to invite you to a bold re-imagining of the South East as a single economic bloc.
For too long, we have looked at our five states as individual islands, but the era of the solitary path is over. Today, I propose the birth of the South East Common Market – a bold, borderless unification of our commerce, our talent, and our industrial grit. By fusing our five distinct economies into one powerhouse, we are no longer just negotiating for a seat at the table; we are building the table ourselves.
This is more than a policy shift; it is the awakening of an economic giant, transforming the South East into a unified, seamless theatre of enterprise where our shared heritage fuels our collective prosperity.
Across the world, the rules of prosperity are changing. The global economy is being reorganised by technology, by climate pressures, by supply chain realignments, by capital that now moves faster than politics, and by competition that punishes delay.
The world is entering a new era where those who can organise themselves, integrate their markets, and build systems at scale will rise. Those who cannot will remain consumers of other people’s added value.
So, today I want to propose a simple premise. If we want a different future, we must build a different system. And a different system begins with a change in how we think. That begins with one decision, here in this hall: A decision to change our thinking and undertake a total re-imagining of what is possible for the South East.

The South East Vision 2050 (SEV2050) Regional Stakeholders’ Forum came to a close last Friday in Enugu after four intense days of dialogue, alignment, and shared responsibility for the future of our region.
What stood out was not only the quality of ideas, but the breadth and depth of participation. Governments, the organised private sector, financial institutions, development partners, traditional institutions, professionals, women and youth groups, civil society, and our diaspora all chose to stay, engage, and think long term.
#SEV2050 was deliberately designed as an open and inclusive process because development plans endure only when people are involved in shaping them from the very beginning.
For the first time in a long while, the five South East Governors sat together to discuss long-term development, shared infrastructure, regional integration, and collective competitiveness. That moment alone was historic, and I sincerely thank Your Excellencies for the leadership you have shown in driving this charge.
I am grateful to His Excellency, the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Kashim Shettima, GCON @KashimSM, for declaring the Forum open; to the Government of Enugu State for the exceptional hosting and on-ground support; to the National Assembly for its legislative backing; and to the Federal Ministry of Regional Development, along with Ministers and Heads of Government Agencies, for their guidance and support.
None of this would be possible without the institutional foresight, vision, and leadership of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR @officialABAT, whose commitment to regional development laid the foundation for SEV2050 and the @sedcgov.
Now comes the real work. We return not with another forum, but with progress.
The South East is ready to build.

The final day tackled the critical question: how do we finance the priority areas discussed in previous days?
Discussions focused on mobilizing public, private, diaspora, and development capital to fund the South East’s development priorities.
The Forum concluded with the presentation and adoption of the SEV2050 Stakeholders’ Communiqué—a formal commitment to coordinated regional action.

Honored to welcome the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria , H.E Senator Kashim Shettima to Enugu for the Historic SEDC ( South East Development Commission) Stakeholder Forum . The Agenda is for the South East Vision 2050 development plan. The South East Governors, and various stakeholders from the South East and beyond laid out their objectives , with Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima launching the 25-year development blueprint for the South-East region, reiterating that the region is a central pillar of Nigeria’s economic future.
At the well attended Forum, the Vice President announced that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of the South East Investment Company Limited, designed to mobilise resources from the diaspora, capital markets, and development finance institutions for the region’s development.
The Vice President highlighted that the gathering was a decisive break from short-term governance cycles toward a structured, multi-decade development framework.
He also reaffirmed that the SEDC was conceived to focus on structural transformation rather than routine administrative activity, insisting that Nigeria is strongest when its regions thrive.
“In recognition of the distinctive character of the South-East, its entrepreneurial spirit, its global diaspora, and its long-standing relationship with international capital, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the establishment of the South East Investment Company Limited,” he stated.
He said the company will work in synergy with the South-East Development Commission (SEDC) to address postwar infrastructure gaps and drive long-term regional competitiveness.
