AI5 will punch far above its weight, because the entire Tesla AI software stack is designed to make maximally effective use of every circuit. We co-signed our AI software and hardware. Bear in mind that AI5, while it can be used for training in data centers, is primarily optimized for AI edge compute in Optimus and Robotaxi. There is still significant room for improvement. In the same half reticle and same process node, we think a single AI6 chip has the potential to match a dual SoC AI5.

Tesla’s forthcoming AI5 uses a half-reticle design, which is crucial for yield. A reticle defines the imaging area of a lithography machine, fitting two chips per shot effectively doubles yield. This means the Tesla chip design team had to carefully manage die features, for instance dropping the older ISP (and classic GPU) to make room for more AI cores. By contrast, NVIDIA’s Blackwell fills nearly a full reticle, making it a single-reticle design. If Tesla hits its compute and efficiency targets with AI5 in this half-reticle format, it’s almost like cutting fab requirements in half. And this has a big impact on Terafab, especially if it carries forward for AI6, AI7, etc.

phil beisel@pbeisel

Terafab may be the most essential vertical integration Tesla has ever undertaken— and it is truly non-optional. It will take years to build and will test even Elon’s speedrunning abilities to the limit, but that won’t stop him from trying. The breakthrough likely lies in overhauling the overall facility’s cleanroom model. By moving wafers in sealed pods with localized micro-environments, the fab no longer needs a monolithic ultra-clean space. Elon’s line about “eating cheeseburgers and smoking cigars” on the fab floor isn’t silly, it’s the practical reality of a radically simpler, cheaper, faster approach that could finally change the economics of chipmaking. This is all forced by the brutal “pinch” in chip supply. Tesla must produce on the order of 100–200 billion AI chips per year just to saturate its roadmap. That volume powers: FSD cars & Robotaxis (tens of millions of vehicles needing AI5 inference for near-perfect autonomy), Physical Optimus (scaling from thousands today to millions per year, each requiring AI5/AI6-level compute), Digital Optimus (the new xAI-Tesla software agents for digital/office automation, running massive inference clusters), Space-based data centers (AI7/Dojo3 orbital compute for GW-scale training and inference beyond Earth limits). AI5 delivers the ~10× leap for vehicles and early robots; AI6 shifts focus to Optimus + terrestrial DCs; AI7 goes orbital. No external foundry (TSMC, Samsung, etc.) can deliver that scale or timeline— hence the Terafab launch. Without it, the entire robotics + autonomy future hits a brick wall. Terafab isn’t optional; it’s the only way forward.

@SawyerMerritt @Tesla So Tesla came out with an announcement amount a chip factory starting in 7 days and Samsung says second half of 2027. Curious when AI5 vehicles will be out. My guess is late 2027.

@leopardsnow @SawyerMerritt I’ve been using Robotaxi to commute daily since November. When you actually ride in it every day, seating comfort & interior amenities matter. If you’re satisfied with bare minimum, that’s on you, some of us expect better from a daily ride. Enjoy your couch.

@DirtyTesLa Not a Tesla hater. I own 2 of them but these Cybercab seats need some help. They just seem a bit plain in comparison to the Tesla performance seats or Lucid seats shown in the photos and the Tesla screen is nice but not panoramic like many other vehicles.

@DirtyTesLa The lucid seats look much better than Cybercab and the screen is more full as well. I think it’s hard to dispute that. I also think the Cybercab seats look thin. These lucid seats remind me of the Model Y performance seats 💺

NEWS: Sendil Palani, Tesla's Vice President of Finance, has announced he is leaving the company after 17 years. "Remember that Tesla’s mission is so ambitious and complex that any narrative about the company is naturally an oversimplification. Seek the truth about the company at all times. And support it in any way that you can! There are few higher callings/better uses of your time." Thanks for everything you did at Tesla @sendilpalani! Good luck in the future!
Sendil Palani@sendilpalani

After seventeen incredible years, my latest chapter at Tesla has come to a close. Words won’t do justice to how fulfilling the experience has been, but I’ll try anyway: Tesla barely survived Christmas 2008. I started a few days later in our Finance team, under an ongoing “Tesla Deathwatch”. I slept under my desk in San Carlos, CA at least once, and I wasn’t the only one. There are many companies with hard-working and talented employees, but few have the level of commitment and collaboration of the Tesla team. In retrospect, this should have been an obvious predictor of the successes that would follow. This is as true today as it was in 2009. To my former Finance team: You are heroes within a company full of heroics, given the full-body workout that is your daily job. Take an Accounting or Finance textbook off the shelf and flip to a random page - Tesla is undoubtedly manifesting the underlying concept in the real world. From selling hardware and software under various business models, managing assets of all types (including digital ones), to pursuing continuous investment into an ambitious future throughout the world, you make the impossible look easy. To my colleagues across the rest of the company - I am grateful for the time that you have spent to educate me, including during my stints outside of the Finance team. You have started with one of Tesla’s strongest advantages - the strongest talent across engineering, manufacturing/operations, and customer-facing functions - and have turned it into an unstoppable force via your “one team” attitude. For me, late-night sessions on topics ranging from the physics of a brake rotor to the training of a neural network proved more valuable than any classroom experience that came before, and made the company stronger as a result. Going to work is not supposed to be this much fun. @elonmusk : A heartfelt thanks for your endless love of humanity, and for demonstrating the power of thinking from first principles at all times, about all things. When Abundance is achieved and money ceases to have meaning, these lessons will be the most valuable commodity in our economy. To the outside world, who may not have experienced the above first-hand: Remember that Tesla’s mission is so ambitious and complex that any narrative about the company is naturally an oversimplification. Seek the truth about the company at all times. And support it in any way that you can! There are few higher callings/better uses of your time.

One year ago today, I took delivery of my Launch Series Model Y at Giga Texas. Best car I've ever owned. It can drive itself anywhere I need to go, is constantly improving, I never need to do any oil changes (I always hated those), and costs me just $18 to fully charge.

after this, I will shut up. just please: put yourself in the shoes of a customer that: - bought Model S/X in 2022/2023 (~$140k for a Plaid), or even 3/Y at ~$60-75k - paid an additional $15k for FSD (12 ½ years worth of subscription at current pricing) - doesn't have access to latest FSD versions because HW3 (missed cutoff point by a few months) - can't justify upgrading to HW4 because they’re deeply underwater on their current car - see $15k FSD purchase option drop by nearly half, even though Tesla said it was only going to get more expensive - see a great deal on a Cybertruck with "Free FSD Transfer for loyal customers!" advertised right below the Order button. press "Order." - aren’t chronically online, so miss Tesla quietly changing the terms retroactively - show up (or are about to show up) for delivery in June only to be told “sorry, we’re not honoring that” - then went online to figure out what happened… and got hit with “stop wanting things for free!” these customers exist, and will never buy another Tesla again.

@SawyerMerritt The FSD-paid crowd buying again before 3/31/2026 is not a massive pool of customers. Even if it was, that’s still more sales. Make it make sense. Tweaking transfer terms on your most loyal and committed customers is a choice and wild. Money talks. Wallets remember.

UPDATE: Last night, Tesla changed its FSD transfer policy (pic on left). You now have to take delivery by March 31, 2026 to be eligible. For people who placed an order before this policy change, including Cybertruck dual-motor AWD order holders: • If your delivery window is on or before March 31, 2026, or it gets pushed into April due to a delay caused by Tesla, the company will still honor FSD transfer. • Tesla will NOT honor FSD transfer if the initial delivery window was after March 31, 2026 when the order was placed. • If your order window is beyond March 31, 2026 or you end up not being able to take delivery by March 31, 2026, Tesla will offer you a refund of your $250 order fee. Before, Tesla's website said: "customers who place an order for a new Tesla vehicle by March 31, 2026 may qualify for transferring FSD (Supervised)." Not anymore. While Tesla always said directly on their FSD transfer website page that the "FSD transfer program is subject to change or end at any time," I’d still like to see Tesla give all $60k Cybertruck AWD orders made before last night’s policy change the option for FSD transfer at time of delivery. Many people placed an order because they thought they would be able to transfer FSD. I’ve deleted the post I made a couple days ago (pic on right) about Cybertruck AWD FSD transfers to avoid anyone seeing that post, but not this update, and mistakenly placing an order. While I did link to the terms page in the thread, I should have added in my first post Tesla’s exact disclaimer wording from the FSD transfer page: “The FSD (Supervised) Transfer Program is subject to change or end at any time." I’m really bummed out for the people who already ordered the $60k Cybertruck and wanted to transfer FSD, even though Tesla is offering order fee refunds. Keep in mind, Tesla can always decide to change the terms on this stuff at any time. People can reach out to any Tesla sales advisor with any questions. They will confirm this info. @SawyerMerritt Tesla: “Subject to change or end at any time” Also Tesla: May NOT honor transfers, even after orders. And people think FSD (Supervised) locks in FSD (Unsupervised)? The only thing clearly protected here is Tesla’s ability to change the rules. Policy > assumptions. Money talks
