The noise from a few corners of England over the tragic death of an Irish stakes winner Economics at Poonawalla Stud Farms says less about India and more about the prejudices that refuse to retire.
Colic is the great leveller of the equine world. It does not consult passports. It does not ask whether the horse stands in County Kildare, Kentucky, or Pune. Horses at Coolmore Stud, Darley Stud, and the finest farms in the United States have succumbed to it despite world class veterinary care. To insinuate that a case of colic in India is somehow “man made” is not analysis. It is ignorance wearing a blazer.
Poonawalla Stud Farms is not a rustic paddock with a bucket and hope. It is a meticulously managed, internationally benchmarked establishment with bloodstock that has competed and succeeded globally. Its infrastructure, veterinary protocols, pasture management, and horsemanship can stand comparison with any leading nursery in Europe or America. Those who have actually walked its barns know this. Those who have not are busy composing opinions from armchairs.
There is also a whiff of something older in these comments. The faint perfume of a colonial hangover that finds it hard to accept that India is no longer a peripheral outpost in racing or in any other sphere. India has built world class industries, from technology to pharmaceuticals to sport, while retaining a civilisation that predates most modern nations by millennia. The idea that a horse’s welfare is somehow compromised simply because it resides in India is an insult not only to professionals here, but to facts themselves.
Tragedies occur in elite breeding centres across the globe. When they do in Ireland or England, they are called unfortunate. When they do in India, they are called suspicious. That double standard deserves to be called out.
Criticism is welcome in racing. It sharpens standards. But criticism without knowledge is merely noise. And noise, however loud, does not become truth.

Aakriti Art Gallery Trophy – Supreme Pune City Gold Cup Day
On the occasion of the Special Race Day at the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC), Pune, Aakriti Art Gallery is delighted to present the Aakriti Art Gallery Trophy as part of the Supreme Pune City Gold Cup Day on 13th September 2025.
The winner of this race will be awarded a specially commissioned bronze trophy created by eminent sculptor Asim Basu (b. 1947), a senior Indian artist whose works are held in prestigious collections such as the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, and the Birla Academy, Kolkata.
An alumnus of the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata, Basu is celebrated for his distinctive sculptural language—rooted in modernist abstraction yet deeply connected to everyday life. Executed in the lost-wax bronze technique, his works are admired for their textured surfaces, compositional harmony, and sensitive portrayal of human bonds, humor, and tenderness. His sculptures distill fleeting, intimate moments—whether a mother with her child, friends in conversation, or figures in repose—into timeless bronze expressions.
This specially chosen trophy embodies his philosophy of elevating the ordinary into the extraordinary. Its presentation at RWITC not only celebrates the triumph of the winning connections but also brings the legacy of contemporary Indian art into dialogue with the heritage of Indian racing.

They rightly restricted AFRICAN GOLD to mile even at the cost of skipping regional 10f derbies which he could have easily won on sheer class. Now they want to take a shot at 12f 🙈
Hopefully not another KNOTTY LEGEND 🙏
The rest definitely deserve a shot ✅

@NalinisKitchen Was it necessary to write My plate is free from tears, cruelty and guilt & then you will justify your post.

I received so much hate on my vegetarianism post.
If I say "I'm proud to be Indian. My country is free from terrorists.", other countries don't get offended.

The parents of this kid must be arrested and prosecuted for making this child do such drama for their financial benefit instead of sending him to school.
This has nothing to do with Hinduism or religiosity.

“Another Jewel added to my collection : 1921 Prince of Wales at the Calcutta Racecourse"
This photograph is indeed a rare and fascinating addition to my collection, capturing a momentous event in the history of Indian horse racing. It features the Prince of Wales, later known as King Edward VIII, during his visit to India in 1921. The image was taken at the Calcutta racecourse, one of the oldest and most prestigious racecourses in the country, dating back to 1820.
The Prince of Wales' visit was a significant event, symbolizing the British Empire's influence over India at that time. Horse racing was a popular pastime among the British elite, and the Calcutta racecourse was one of the key venues where the social and political elite gathered. The presence of the Prince of Wales at this event would have added considerable prestige and excitement to the occasion.
The photograph itself is a treasure trove of historical details. The crowd in the background, dressed in the formal attire of the period, reflects the social customs of the time, with men in suits and hats, and women in elegant dresses and gloves. The trophies displayed in the foreground are indicative of the importance of the races, and they provide a glimpse into the grandeur and ceremonial aspects of the event.
This particular moment, where the Prince and other dignitaries are seen tipping their hats, conveys the respect and formality associated with royal visits. It's a powerful reminder of the connections between British royalty and the Indian subcontinent during the colonial era.
For me, this photograph is more than just a historical artifact; it represents a piece of the cultural and social tapestry of India during the early 20th century. It adds depth to my collection, offering insights into the role of horse racing in Indian society and the broader historical context in which these events occurred. I'm excited to continue exploring and preserving such significant moments from the past, not just as a collector, but as someone deeply interested in the rich heritage of horse racing in India.
