Marcus Freeman on how you get people to commit to something bigger than themselves Most people think buy-in is a decision you make one time. You commit. You're in. Done. Freeman knows better. "The ability to make sure everybody feels valued is so important. To get people to commit to something bigger than themselves, they have to feel like their determined role is important." Nobody sacrifices for a role they think doesn't matter. Value isn't a bonus you hand out - it's the foundation commitment is built on. "Then they have to make a choice that no matter what - us achieving team glory is more important than what I want as an individual." Notice the word - choice. That distinction changes everything. "I think it's a choice that every coach, every player, every person in our football program has to continuously make." That's the part nobody tells you about team over self. It's not a personality trait. It's not something you either have or don't. It's a decision you remake every single time your interests and the team's interests split apart. And they will split apart. Constantly. The best team players aren't the ones who never want something for themselves. They're the ones who choose the team anyway - again, and again, and again. 1. Value creates buy-in. 2.
