@LizARees @NewcastleCC Absolutely; I think the council might be open to addressing this junction, however I do not think @northumbriapol would be interested in drivers on phones in Jesmond, even though it's endemic. I do not think they have the resource. Love to be wrong tbh

Another near miss at the junction of Mistletoe and Osborne. This driver was engrossed in their phone, didn't see the cyclist coming straight over from Queens. Junction needs changing @NewcastleCC

In a car-obligatory society, teens rely on parents to chauffeur them to and from sports; counting down the days until they can drive themselves. In a car-optional one, they’ve already been navigating their city for years; moving safely, happily, and healthily with their friends.

@joachimnicolas @MayorJD It's been difficult to find out. I think some of them are owned and used by pre and after school care AKA "BSO" and may be privately funded.

@SPACEforJesmond @MayorJD Yeah but more specifically -- those things cost a bomb surely, so are they bought by the council and loaned to schools, or bought by schools with a grant? I mean that level of detail.

Children’s physical, social and mental health: increased Pollution, congestion, parental stress: reduced We need to build for this. We need to normalise this.

We need to think: Can a child cycle and walk safely here? Get to school by themselves? Hang out with friends? Play? The convenience of independent children should be prioritised over the convenience of driving quickly.

What's the vision for children in Newcastle? @NewcastleCC and @UNICEF are in partnership to deliver a #ChildFriendlyCity chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-eas… Objectives include climate action and increasing independent mobility. The council need to get on with delivering these.

A reminder: those who support 15 minute cities, cycle lanes and filtered residential areas do not want to steal anyone’s freedom. The opposite. We want freedom for children to move about. Freedom to leave the car at home. Freedom to walk, cycle or wheel safely. @LoveJesmond

This was Jesmond this morning as @NewcastleCC ripped out the Low Traffic Neighbourhood bollards. As has been the case for the last year, local opinion very polarised. Intriguing to see what comes next.
