@LizARees @NewcastleCC Absolutely; I think the council might be open to addressing this junction, however I do not think @northumbriapol would be interested in drivers on phones in Jesmond, even though it's endemic. I do not think they have the resource. Love to be wrong tbh

Another near miss at the junction of Mistletoe and Osborne. This driver was engrossed in their phone, didn't see the cyclist coming straight over from Queens. Junction needs changing @NewcastleCC

“Cars particularly destroy the liberty of the child and the teenager to move around safely” “Children are much less free now than they were 50 or 100 years ago, a fact which changes the nature and vitality of our towns.” theguardian.com/politics/2024/…

Our streets used to be places for moving, socialising, playing and enjoying rather than simply park cars or drive through. The change is the result of decisions - or lack of them - made by planners over the decades. Make new decisions @NewcastleCC playingout.net/blog/can-play-…

In a car-obligatory society, teens rely on parents to chauffeur them to and from sports; counting down the days until they can drive themselves. In a car-optional one, they’ve already been navigating their city for years; moving safely, happily, and healthily with their friends.

@joachimnicolas @MayorJD It's been difficult to find out. I think some of them are owned and used by pre and after school care AKA "BSO" and may be privately funded.

@SPACEforJesmond @MayorJD Yeah but more specifically -- those things cost a bomb surely, so are they bought by the council and loaned to schools, or bought by schools with a grant? I mean that level of detail.

@SPACEforJesmond What would it take to actually have these? How are they set up and funded and organised in the Netherlands?

🟢Children comprise 19% of the population of Newcastle. 🟠They can’t vote, and have no say over the car dominated environment they live in or how they travel around. 🔴Decision makers need to ensure children's lives are not negatively impacted by noisy minorities against change.

A reminder: those who support 15 minute cities, cycle lanes and filtered residential areas do not want to steal anyone’s freedom. The opposite. We want freedom for children to move about. Freedom to leave the car at home. Freedom to walk, cycle or wheel safely. @LoveJesmond
Melissa & Chris Bruntlett@modacitylife

Our society professes to care about children. We declare their well-being the most important thing in the world. Yet we keep creating cities that steal their freedom and security. What kind of streets would we build if we really wanted to raise happy, healthy, independent kids?

This was Jesmond this morning as @NewcastleCC ripped out the Low Traffic Neighbourhood bollards. As has been the case for the last year, local opinion very polarised. Intriguing to see what comes next.
