Did you know that there is a baby entombed on the USS Utah in Pearl Harbor? USS Utah is on the north side of Ford Island and doesn’t attract as many visitors as its fellow memorial, the USS Arizona, on the other side. The Utah was torpedoed and capsized on December 7 with the loss of 58 souls. Also on board is Nancy Lynn Wagner, who has been born August 29, 1937. Little Nancy lived for only two days and was cremated. When her father, Yeoman Chief Albert Wagner was assigned to the Utah, he obtained permission and had planned on burying his daughter’s ashes at sea; they were brought on board. Unfortunately, the Japanese changed the plans. Nancy’s urn remained on board after the attack. Divers did attempt to recover it, but they were unsuccessful in gaining access to the compartment due to damage. To this day, the urn and ashes of baby Nancy are still entombed along with the remains of the 58 men lost on the USS Utah who are considered her guardians.

In 1980 when I first joined the Navy, ships had a policy where they would issue a liberty card for you to leave the ship. I was on a ship with my brother who would argue with a signpost. I will never forget one day when he was arguing with the LPO who pulled his liberty card and then pulled mine. I said, why are you pulling my liberty card and he said it looked like you were going to say something.

I honestly don’t remember the exact scores but they are different program. Cooks are the same but the enlistment programs are different. They may very well be higher I just don’t remember. Also factor in that most submarine ratings are technical so yeah I think some are higher than the average surface rating.

I spent four years aboard USS Wyoming SSBN-742 and one thing that stuck out was how each year, the crew that was off, went to Cheyenne for Frontier Days. They were wines and dined, lunch with the governor, grand marshals of the parade, etc. It really struck me when I saw pictures of one of my guys signing autographs. This was a guy who, well, was not the sharpest tool in the shed and here he was a celebrity 😂 but that started a love of all things Wyoming. My wife and I have visited many times and have been all over the state. We even put in an offer on a home there (Afton) but the guy refused, and life took me somewhere else. Wyoming is truly a gem and even though I do not live there, it has always felt like home when we’re there. Here’s a few from our visit in May 2025. And yes, the upper elevations of Yellowstone still had snow. Some of the roads in the park were still closed.

It all depends on the line scores of the ASVAB. Each rating will have a different minimum based on specific areas of the test. Say for example, Math Knowledge, Reading Comprehension, Mechanical Ability sections have to be a minimum of 150. So you take those three and it has to be a minimum of 150. Each Navy rating is like that. The overall score really doesn’t mean anything. It just gives an idea of where a person stands. When I was classifying, the overall score had to be at least 31 to qualify for entrance. There are those that don’t have the line scores to qualify for a particular rating but have at least a 31 overall are signed up for the Seaman/Airman/Fireman program i.e. undesignated. There are benefits to that program though because if they do well enough, they can literally choose their rate after seeing what the other ones do. It almost gives them an option.

I agree. There are many comments with other great films but SPR changed the way war movies were made and looked at. The grit and realism had never been seen before. When a movie changes the genre forever, that says something about the impact. It’s hard to watch any other war movie made now. Some more so than others but it’s always a comparison to SPR.

Saving Private Ryan is the greatest war movie ever made, and I will die on this hill.

Treadwell’s Grizzly Man footage is incredible, no doubt. But let’s not pretend what got him and Amie killed was bad luck. He was warned for years: don’t camp late season when bears are desperate, don’t set up on active bear trails near salmon runs, don’t habituate grizzlies, carry spray, use a fence. He ignored all of it. Multiple violations, zero real precautions. He knew better and chose not to act like it. Then he brought Amie, who was scared of bears and wanted to leave. This wasn’t “nature being cruel.” It was arrogance. He believed he had a special bond with animals that can kill you in seconds.

Tim Treadwell dedicated his life to protecting Alaska’s Grizzlies. One summer he convinced his girlfriend to join him. The bears k*lled and ate them both.

@SSN_685 It's my home state and I definitely miss it. Life had other plans for me after my retirement and ended up in Ohio.
