Why are investment bankers living in two up two downs in South London that were built for manual labourers? Because we haven’t built enough luxury housing. When we don’t build luxury homes, the houses that used to be for the everyman become the preserve of the elite. And everyone else moves *down* the chain. By building luxury homes we can move everyone *up* that chain.
Britain Remade@BritainRemade

Building "luxury flats" actually makes housing more affordable for everyone. It's an effect shown in studies around the world. The chains created by people moving into high end properties free up homes all the way down the ladder.

No smoking gun, but the preponderance of evidence points to smartphones, not economics, as the culprit for the global drop in fertility: • In the US and UK, births fell first and fastest in areas that got 4G earliest • Birth rates were stable in the US, UK and Australia until 2007; in France and Poland until 2009; in Mexico and Indonesia until 2012; in Ghana, Nigeria and Senegal until 2013-15 Each of these inflection points matches local smartphone adoption (see picture). • The younger the age group, the sharper the drop. • in-person socialising among young adults is dropping. In SK, by 50% in 20 years • Sexual dysfunction is higher among heavy social media user • Effect is largest in culturally traditional societies — Middle East, Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa • Decline holds across countries hit hard by GFC 2008 and those not hit, fast-growing and not growing. Excellent again @jburnmurdoch. ft.com/content/fba35e…

Still incredible that the DeepMind documentary has footage of exact moment Demis is told that AlphaFold can “easily” predict all known (1-2B) protein sequences “in a month” and he says to do it. Then, it shows the moment AlphaFold is released to the world.

I'm thrilled to share this unique collaboration with Artemis Il astronaut @astro_reid. Artemis II was a unique opportunity to get high-quality imagery of the moon, and Reid was gracious enough to capture some special image sets for me during the lunar flyby.

Credit where it’s due. This is a very sensible step. Sure we can argue about the relative merits of using traditional nuclear instead of SMRs but just to hear an Energy minister talk about a new “nuclear golden age” is a big moment. The first sign of pragmatism returning

The contracts have been signed for the first small modular reactors here in the UK. Delivering energy security and thousands of good jobs. All part of our golden age of new nuclear power 👇

To think that we aren't just going "to the Moon," but rather traveling to meet it at an exact point in space... changes everything. It all comes down to orbital mechanics: arriving at the precise location, at the precise moment. One tiny error... and it simply doesn't happen

The coolest orbital animation I've seen of Artemis 2 Just really shows you how far away they're flying today and also how precise they need to be to go to the moon

@SamaHoole Transplant those Dutch to South Africa and give them unlimited red meat. Include a culture whose main way of socialising is to grill meat over fire (braai) often at the end of a long day of hard farm work. What you land up with is the Afrikaaner (and 4 Rugby World Cup trophies)

In the mid-1800s, the average Dutch man was 5'4". Shorter than the average American. Shorter than most of their European neighbours. Today the average Dutch man is 6'0". The tallest national population on earth. That is a 20-centimetre transformation in about 150 years. One of the fastest documented height increases in human history. What drove it? Researchers are consistent: dairy. Meat. High-quality animal protein at scale, democratised across the population as prosperity spread. The Netherlands is a dairy farming country. It always was. What changed was that ordinary people, not just the wealthy, could access what the land produced. The Dutch didn't get taller because of a new crop. They got taller because of a cow.
