i was confused about this same thing last year. i did really well with youtube the last three years of high school, so college didn’t make much sense outside of the “experience” i decided not to apply, and a year later i can confidently say you can still find community and a social life without college. more young entrepreneurs (18-22) are building and succeeding at big things than ever before, and if you do cool stuff and just put yourself out there a little, you'll meet people. unless you’re going to college to actually learn something specific, you’re probably better off going all in on your craft. i haven’t met a single person who regrets not going. and for most people it’s more fun to have a few close friends and just grind 24/7 than to be caught up in a big social life

I saw a tik tok today that said: "If your life was a movie and people were watching. What would the audience be screaming at you to do?" Very quickly I realize the answer is that I should completely not go to college, get an office, and move the team in house to go full hard core on taking over the calorie tracking space. Even though I only plan to go for a semester just to check it out and hopefully build some friendships, part of me really wonders if it is a complete waste of time. I think it ultimately is a question of optimization. Do I want to go all in on prioritizing building great companies? Or do I want some sort of balance? Maybe I can do both. But what's certain is that it would be a more exciting movie if I put my entire social life on the line and didn't go to college. Yet, life isn't a movie, so probably not what I should optimize for.

@zach_yadegari YouTube if done right is by far the best for skill building The number of people I've seen succeed in other fields who started with YouTube is very high, since you practice pattern recognition, how to make things viral, human psychology, etc, in very high volume.

Don't overthink for months and never post — 95% of big creators aren't as smart as you think. They just showed up every day and improved in small increments. Also, consider targeting older audiences — they're switching to YouTube as their primary entertainment source at a very fast rate (parents, grandparents, etc.). There's far less competition in this space, as YouTube has traditionally been home to younger audiences. Just look at the biggest creators. Younger audiences are still there and will continue to grow, but it's more linear since there wasn't a switch — they just grew up with it. And many younger people use TikTok more anyway as it has more cultural/social impact. Most big trends and memes over last 3 yrs were from tiktok. Also YouTube is the last major click and watch media platform so packaging is an exclusive skill to it you need to master.

@noahmorris Are you confident the quality standard won't skyrocket as the barrier to entry lowers that much? Hard to see a world where for longer than a few month bull run, consistent 1 million view + quality will be made from a prompt

End of summer I think I’ll have GPT / Manus level YouTube agents making any type of faceless videos. Hopefully in the coming years I’ll be able to craft YouTube AGI. Building the fundamentals now. Again also heavily depends on how good top level models become.

@joonahw Work can be many things so id say deep work is around 6-8 and then lighter work can be another 6-8 (talking to friend and brain dumping ideas, watching podcast that has valuable info, planning, ideating, doing tasks that don't need as much thought, etc)

Love what you all are doing—but I’ve got a feeling this take might not age too well. AI might not be great at creating truly groundbreaking art on its own, but it’s definitely going to be a key part of the creative process moving forward. I don’t see the issue if writers, for example, outline scene notes and then use AI to generate a quick rough storyboard or concept to visualize their idea. It speeds things up, gives a strong foundation to build on, and lets animators focus on bringing that vision to life with their own creativity. It also lowers the barrier to entry for new creators trying to break into animation. If someone wants to launch their own animated episode, doing everything solo can take months—and most shows need multiple episodes just to have a shot at gaining traction or competing with bigger studios. AI can help level the playing field and let people take more shots that may hit. There's a reason why big studios have dominated the space for DECADES. Of course, some people will misuse it—but that’s true of every new tool or innovation. The real value comes down to how it's used.

We employ over 80 artists to carefully work on every single part of the animation and creative process. You will never get the nuance, complexity and beauty of a Ghibli film without the human hand and their love. We will never use AI to replace art in our works.
