Breaking News: Dr. Mekolle Pius Etuge Makes History With First PhD Defense in Accounting at University of Buea Dr. Mekolle Pius Etuge has made history as the first candidate to successfully defend a doctoral thesis in Accounting at the University of Buea’s Department of Accounting. His thesis defense took place on Saturday, May 16, 2026, in the Boardroom of the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences, after four years of coursework and intensive research. Following more than three hours of presentation and academic exchange with a six-member examining jury chaired by Professor Visemih Willian, Dr. Mekolle earned an outstanding Grade “A”. His doctoral research was titled “Ownership Structure and Earnings Management of Listed Companies in OHADA Member States.” It was jointly supervised by Professor Fossung Micheal Forzeh and Professor Hanko Osee. The study examined how ownership concentration, individual ownership and foreign ownership influence earnings management among listed companies in OHADA member states, with firm size considered as a moderating factor. Using data from 23 firms listed on the BRVM and BVMAC stock exchanges between 2018 and 2023, the research found that ownership structures have limited influence on accrual-based earnings management but significantly affect real earnings management. The study contributes to corporate governance and financial reporting research in African emerging markets, particularly within the OHADA institutional context. It recommends stronger governance enforcement, closer monitoring of operational decisions and improved shareholder engagement to reduce opportunistic managerial behaviour. Speaking after the defense, Professor Mekolle M. Prosper described the achievement by his younger brother as a proud moment for the family, the University of Buea and Cameroon’s wider academic community. He praised Dr. Mekolle’s resilience, discipline and commitment to scholarly excellence.
