@agraybee The attractor basin of human society is superstitious, paranoid, selfish, conservative, familial groups. It takes immense concerted will and tremendous luck for a collection of people to escape this trap.

Because there are a million other types of social structures that get in the way of this. You need your whole society to simultaneously agree that the law overrides the will of a clan's patriarch.

purely technically it's pretty easy to get rich as a nation, you just need rule of law, basic property rights and a functional court system. the weird question is rather why these basic features are so rare on a global scale.

BLM Announces Plan to Fell Oregon's Last Great Forests One billion board feet per year... 20 days to make your voice heard. They filter drinking water for downstream communities. They hold soil on steep slopes above salmon streams that are already in crisis. They’re home to the northern spotted owl, the marbled murrelet, coho salmon, steelhead, and hundreds of species that evolved over millennia in conditions you can’t replicate by planting seedlings in rows. morethanjustparks.substack.com/p/blm-announce…

@sp6runderrated We need to make the general population realize that recession = house falling down because it wasn’t built sturdy enough, rather than a forest fire clearing out the weedy undergrowth.

@abcdentminded @LegoRacers2 Arnolfini Portrait by Jan Van Eyck (1434). The POV is from the eyes of a person in the doorway looking at the couple, who can be seen in the mirror on the back wall.

Are there any earlier reproductions of an explicitly first-person view prior to Ernst Mach's View from the Left Eye (1886) and John Singer Sargent's Driving Horses (1903)?

Neguse: Where is this company headquartered? Noem: I don’t know. Neguse: I don’t know either. We can’t find it. We did find an address that’s registered to a political operative. This company that received 143 million dollars was incorporated 8 days before this contract went out. You want the American people to believe that this is all above board, that $143 million of taxpayer money just happened to go to this one company that doesn't have a headquarters, doesn't have a website, has never done work for the federal government before and is registered apparently or attached to a residence from a political operative, and of course one of the subcontractors of that contract, as you know, is a political firm that's tied to, to you back when you were governor of South Dakota?

@agraybee Additionally, there is such huge diversity in the tropics that we will likely never actually discover every insect species. We estimate the number of thrips, flies, parasitic wasp, etc species is an order of magnitude higher than currently known. 3/3

@agraybee Every so often a taxonomist will go through a group and reorder, split, and merge various species. Modern phylogenetic analysis also allows DNA-level distinctions between species that visually are not at all distinct, which is where a lot of new species are found. 2/3

Can any entomologist explain how we discover 8,000-10,000 new species of insects a year? Are we actually discovering new ones in the untamed wilds or are we determining that various subspecies are actually different enough to be their own species?

Really don't understand how this isn't a bigger scandal. This is conspiracy to commit federal witness tampering (and likely witness murder) for the purpose of covering up a foreign government's deal with organized crime, a deal that has been affirmed by the DOJ.
Anonymous@YourAnonCentral

In 2025, Rubio and Bukele reached a deal where gang informants, key to combatting cartels and gangs, would be betrayed by the US and sent to El Salvador. The deal hands Bukele custody of people who threatened to reveal agreements between Bukele's government and MS-13.
