Recently leaked audio recordings of Pedro Proença (current president of the Portuguese Football Federation) reveal: ○ Disparaging comments regarding the quality of Portuguese referees - "The referees are weak ... you manage to find three or four lads who are even remotely competent (referencing names such as Artur Soares Dias and João Pinheiro), the rest are all very weak." ○ The former head of the Refereeing Council, José Fontelas Gomes - criticising his lack of educational qualifications and considering him 'a product of Proença'. ○ (Presumably) threatening words in the direction of Fernando Seara (former Chairman of SL Benfica's General Assembly) in anticipation of federation elections in attempt to obtain the unwavering support of the representatives of Portugal's top clubs - "Do you want to play that game with me? Of the 32 times I was summoned to the Judicial Police, 27 were cases involving Benfica ... Don’t mess with me.” were words of the former Liga Portugal president upon referencing that investigations took place within Liga Portugal. National daily sport publications such as A Bola and Record have reported on the matter - the statements are said to have been made around two years ago and the FPF, when contacted by A BOLA, declined to comment due to the illegal nature of how the recordings were obtained.

The evidence includes WhatsApp messages, screenshots, call records, audio recordings and accounts of meetings allegedly held at the Portuguese Football Federation’s headquarters, the Cidade do Futebol. The investigation is still at an early stage, and no one has been charged.

Authorities are investigating claims that certain individuals knew in advance which referees would be assigned and had inappropriate contacts regarding those appointments. The investigation follows a complaint containing around 20 pages of evidence.

The Portuguese Police are investigating allegations of corruption and influence in Liga Portugal over referee appointments. The investigation is centred around the appointments for: Moreirense vs Estrela da Amadora & Estrela da Amadora vs Famalicão. (ZeroZero)
