@Lib_Development Moving just the operating budget of Interstates to toll based financing would solve so many problems...

4. Because the immunity they created is so vague and contradictory it is entirely manipulable. All they did was say an prosecution cannot be based on "core presidential powers" or recite facts related to those powers. But what are core powers? The Court doesn't say.

I literally like all the people in this thread, but I am annoyed by the argument they are making. 1. There are enormous controls against abusive prosecutions of government officials, including grand juries, motions to dismiss, restrictions on the prosecutor, venue rules, etc.
Jan Crawford@JanCBS

This is exactly right. The immunity decision was immediately misreported/mischaracterized as a “get-out-of-jail-free card” for Trump and continues to be used as a weapon to attack the Court, even though its real impact was to shield Joe Biden from Trump’s DOJ

@sharghzadeh There's one left in Ann Arbor, but it does seem to be a specific style to pre depression Detroit.

@2024dion TBH, I would rather it just be capped and converted into a glorified on ramp to I75 from only Jefferson. I'm not really impressed with the surface boulevard they're proposing to replace it, which will need to support very high traffic volumes.

Walking across the freeway Detroit is planning to tear out has really reinforced the case for North Loop removal in my mind. This is a much worse project, connecting the edge of a very unevenly developed part of downtown to a low rise residential area. The North Loop slices through two thriving commercial districts.

@atrembath Or-and hear me out-instead of data center waste heat, the waste heat from a geothermal plant. And instead of urban, in the middle of absolutely nowhere. And instead of pubic, a tourist trap with eye watering prices.

for the record there is a car free city in michigan lmao saying cars are essential for michigan culture isn't true i get that it's a large economic sector but we've had large econ sectors that were net negatives that we've abolished

@Lib_Development Easy. I'm hearing there may be a BART fire sale soon and we may be able to pickup the rolling stock cheap. So as a requirement, the new line must use BART's broad gauge. Value engineering solved!

@Birdyword @mattyglesias It’s more of a class thing. Locals intuit (rightly or wrongly) that the “tech moguls” are getting rich off these and they’re not. They then backfill stories about electricity and water costs. It’s the sort of thing that wouldn’t happen if they were building an aluminum smelter.

Many people do not seem to want data centres built near them, despite the fact that they don't cause that much traffic and often generate a lot of local tax revenue. I suspect it's partly because they're ugly! My proposal:

@DaveBondyTV The program was long defunct and the administration was in the process of doing this anyways. The council caught wind of this and decided to pretend it was an actual accomplishment.

This is the video of when Ann Arbor, Michigan City Council voted to spend $18,000 to remove neighborhood watch signs because they are not inclusive. What's your take?

@dilanesper And people intuitively understand this. Literally no one says, "Wow! Harvard and Yale have amazing teaching! We must study their methods and replicate it at Big State U."

@dilanesper No, no, no. The whole point of Harvard and Yale is to groom the next generation of Presidents, Senators, Supreme Court Justices, and captains of industry, i.e. gatekeep the elite. MIT and Caltech exist to groom geniuses who will invent novel ways to split the atom.

@stevemouzon Two slightly related things: Details cost money. Much cheaper to paint the brick a single color than repoint it. Houses are thought of as financial assets. Colors are chosen to be inoffensive to the most buyers.

Roughly a quarter of the Canadian population is now foreign born. I can't readily think of a precedent in modern era. (The highest the US ever got was 15% in the 1890s. And also in 2020s) 1/

@rruetigger @JacobAShell That really came from bottom up slightly later. Probably started around 2014 with Ferguson. I first really noticed it in 2015 when the video of the student at Yale screaming at Nicholas Christakis over an email about Halloween costumes.

The point emerges in starker relief if you compare 2015 left with 1990s left: -90s radical left was anti-globalization ('99 Seattle protests etc); -90s center-left supported use of US military power to topple dictators like Milosevic; -90s left-wing intellectual culture was postmodernist and distrustful of "master narratives" as well as materialist ("Wall Street and wages"-focused) framework; -90s left enjoyed MTV alt rock sexual libertinism and would have hated idea of government getting involved in how college students date each other; -90s left-environmentalism was of more localist, treehugger variety, wasn't so interested in vast abstractions like "planetary climate"
