@Thekstatefan I remember Clarence Scott and he deserves mention, but I agree on Newman.

@AugieNash Gibson had great control. He liked to own the inside part of the plate and would brush hitters back that got too close. Most hitters that he hit, he meant to hit.
English

Bob Gibson is always thought of, as a guy who hit a lot of hitters.
But that's not quite true.
Over his career he hit 102 batters, tied for 89th on the all-time list.
Some notable pitchers from the modern era with more hit batsmen:
190 - Randy Johnson
158 - Nolan Ryan
154 - Don Drysdale
141 - Pedro Martinez
117 - Orel Hershiser
117 - Darryl Kile
115 - Justin Verlander
112 - Max Scherzer

@ScoTTU07 @Stanimal032 I went to K-State and master's at Tech before either of you were born. I think I will just start telling them we got electricity before I graduated.
English

@Stanimal032 Dude! Similar thing happened to me yesterday.
Met a new coworker.
Him: I graduated from Texas Tech in 2019
Me: I went to Tech
Him: Really, When did graduate?
Me: 2007
Him: I was 10 in 2007

@CoachJesseOwen This is overreach and will cause more harm than good. Many school districts severely limit Wednesday and Sunday activities/practices but most make exceptions for weather or Monday games for instance.

@CoachKhalilS I was afraid they couldn't keep her. If not staying, I would love to see her at K-State.
English

@terrykack23 @SamfordScoop @11point7 That might even be too far outside at that age group. That's not just on the line of the other batter's box, it is well past it.
English

@DScottFritchen I didn't think it was a great crowd until I saw the attendance at the other sites. We were double the next highest, North Dakota State. Most were under 1000 and some like Mizzou were under 500.

@BaseballCentraI Both teams with the initials UT and wearing orange act the same.

@AugieNash I was fortunate to be there with my parents and brother. The first 5 batters for the NL were Mays, Clemente, Aaron, McCovey and Santo and all played the entire game as did Frank and Brooks Robinson for the AL.

@Stanimal032 I have been a big Brody fan as long as you have been posting here, I think. Don't feel bad about needing some help. There are certainly very few families who wouldn't need help in a situation like this. Glad I could help a little.
English

I’m going to share this once. Some friends offered to do this for us. No one is under any obligation.
This time my family in going through something we’ve never been through. We’ve never had Brody need four surgeries in three months. We’ve never spent over two months away from home like we have to this year. We’ve never had to max out my wife’s PTO for Brody’s medical needs by July. We’ve never needed me to be out of my practice for 6 weeks to help care for my son because he is now a big boy that need two people to lift him in/out of his wheelchair, etc. We’ve never been in this position.
My ego pushed back against this for a long time. I don’t like asking for help. I don’t like feeling like we aren’t able to handle it. I hate all of it. But we had a lot of people ask how they could help us through this time and this is what our friends came up with.
No obligation. No expectation. Appreciation for any little bit. Love you all for all you’ve ALREADY done to lift us up during this time.

@AugieNash My 4 favorite Cardinals pitchers--Bob Gibson, Bob Forsch, Adam Wainwright, John Tudor. I wasn't alive to see Dizzy but he would definitely be my favorite character followed by the Mad Hungarian.
English

Bob Forsch is one of the most underrated pitchers to ever walk that turf. or wear that slugger bird jacket.

- These kids were you, these kids were me.
- All we needed was a backyard, a vacant lot or even the street.
- It didn't matter your age, if you showed up - you played.
- It didn't matter if you were a boy or a girl, if you showed up - you played.
- We umpired ourselves and argued for our side until we were red in the face.
- We used nails and screws to fix our broken bats.
- The balls could be waterlogged, lopsided or have the cover falling off, it didn't matter.
- We would slide not because we needed to, but because dirt and grass stains were cool.
- Mom would yell at us for the dirty clothes, Dad secretly loved it.
- We shared bats and gloves.
- Our bases were bare spots, gunny sacks or pieces of cardboard.
- The kid who always thought he was the best player - wasn't.
- The kid who wasn't very good played right field, but he was happy to be there.
- The kid less scared of the ball was the catcher or first baseman.
- The kid who could hit the best was usually the best pitcher too.
- We'd break a window and run like hell to a safe haven. Then tattle on the kid who broke it.
- We'd cool off by drinking hot water from a garden hose.
- We played until supper time, then reconvene to finish the game.
- We played until the street lights came on.
- If we were on a Little League team, nothing sucked more than losing, not because we lost, but because that meant no Dairy Queen stop.
- We did this ALL summer long, several times a day if we could muster up enough players.
We were just kids, and life was simple and uncomplicated. We had no idea how complicated our lives would become.
So the next time you are out and see some kids playing baseball, just remember, they are creating those same memories that filled your life with joy.
