a barrel of oil runs $92 and comes with a few minor logistical complications.
this year the solar panel should run less than $90; you can order online, ships in a week.

Because of game theory, capitalists must race for growth first
But in a world of constraints, the substrate inevitably limits infinite growth
There is not an infinite amount of resource
The resource expires, and doesn't come back
Therefore the resource must be spent with purpose

Growth is incredibly important

You know how socialists don't get capitalism? Well, nationalists don't get diplomacy. The socialist thinks their state is all-powerful domestically, and the nationalist thinks their state is all-powerful globally, so it can seize whatever it wants by force, because it's so strong, and nothing will ever happen, and no one can resist. Both worldviews are wrong, for similar reasons. The socialist hates capitalists so much, and the nationalist hates foreigners so much, that they often just become blinded by hatred. They come to believe the outgroup is so incompetent that they aren't a threat, and have no use, so long as maximum force is employed. And sometimes this mindset takes them surprisingly far! They loot or conquer much more than you'd expect. But eventually, they encounter constraint.

1991-2026: the unipolar era
1974-2026: the petrodollar era
1945-2026: the postwar era

Specifically, the end of the petrodollar (1974) would also be the end of the unipolar moment (1991) and the postwar order (1945). It would mark the moment when Eurasian powers were once again dominant over Western powers (1492). Finally, a rapid crash in the dollar's purchasing power coupled with military defeat could well break apart the American union (1776).
Few seem to viscerally understand just how dependent America is on money printing. But the end of the petrodollar is the end of Keynesianism as we know it.
And if there's a sudden cost-of-living spike on top of pre-existing levels of political polarization, which are already near Civil War levels...we could see the scenarios that Dalio, the Fourth Turning, and Turchin have described.

Because when you see what is going on there, it makes the west look tired in comparison.
When I went to Shenzhen in 2025, I had my mind blown by seeing the pace of development, and the scale of their building.

Ray Dalio wrote a long piece. Part of his thesis is that China is ascendant versus US.
Nowhere in his analysis does he mention demographics and the issues China are facing.
In our China report we show that GDP priced in dollars for China was 80% of US in 2019. Today it’s 60%.
They are losing 150 million prime age workers into 2032. The decline started in 2020. They are entering the acute phase of their economic crisis. They are Japan demographically in the 90s just 10 times bigger.

Solar sucks as a real power source even compared to wind.
Wind is intermittent but at least blows some almost 24/7 so if you overbuild enough and add a lot of storage you get something resembling capacity.
Solar disappears 1/2 the time no matter how much you overbuild and thus requires catastrophic amounts of storage to handle real world conditions.
Don’t get me wrong, wind+storage is wildly cost-ineffective but solar+storage is an absolute joke in terms of actually powering the grid 24/7/365, including through the winter storm many just experienced.
Solar only looks like the future when you confuse its intermittent fuel savings with real power.

True, but they just delayed the inevitable.
The debasement was underway.
Then hard men reintroduced hard money.
The siliqua and the solidus.
But that actually caused a shock.
Rome was used to inflation via taxation.
Now they had to raise real taxes.
So the burden of empire became visible.
And Rome still went to zero in 476 AD.

I hadn’t appreciated how close the Crisis of the Third Century came to ending the whole thing for good. It was on the path of a standard late imperial crackup. Then a handful of great leaders managed to stitch enough of it back together so it could hang on for centuries.
