Stepping outside my wheelhouse to tell you what I learned about tariffs today 🤓 Apparently things got heated between Trump and Trudeau during their latest phone call, with Trump using “profanity” during the discussion. Reports say he’s big mad about existing Canadian tariffs on U.S. dairy products — tariffs he agreed to when HE NEGOTIATED the USMCA in 2018. I’ve seen a bunch of people pointing to Tariff Rate Quotas (TRQs) on dairy as a reason for Trump’s new tariffs. NOPE, they’re not. Here is an EXCELLENT explanation of what they are and how they work 👇 The main point: U.S. has an open dairy market with minimal regulation. Canada uses supply management for dairy production, so our dairy is better quality, with fewer supply chain & disease issues (why our eggs are still affordable!) The U.S. agreed to limit their dairy exports to Canada so they don’t crush our Canadian dairy producers. Only when they go OVER THE QUOTA, do they pay the higher tariffs. It’s a fair deal — good job Liberal government — I had no idea about this system! If Trump doesn’t like it, he should take it up with the guy who agreed to it 7 years ago (Trump).
