@IAPonomarenko Agree on russias tactics however I feel this discounts how highly effective Magyars campaign was. These crude tactics unfortunately worked quite well in Georgia, where a weak and disunited opposition failed to secure the same momentum

By the way, it’s rather odd that we expected any serious impact from Russian political technologists on Orban’s campaign. Russia hasn’t had real competitive elections since 1991, and since the late 1990s, political life there has effectively ceased to exist. This is not Ukraine. All Kremlin strategists really know how to do is flood the media space with crude, relentless propaganda, disinformation, and hate-fueled noise. Which, in essence, is exactly what Orban focused on instead of running a campaign about the real issues facing his country, but that isn’t always enough.

The Venice Biennales president’s surname is what now?
Kyrylo Shevchenko@KShevchenkoReal

⚡️⚡️⚡️BREAKING: The European Commission has launched a procedure to freeze or cancel €2 million in funding for the #VeniceBiennale after the organization decided to allow Russia's participation in this year's edition. In a letter sent on April 10 to Biennale President Pietrangelo Buttafuoco, the EU's Education and Culture Executive Agency gave the institution 30 days to clarify and reverse its position on reopening the Russian pavilion — or risk losing the grant allocated until 2028. This follows strong criticism from European Parliament members, a joint statement by Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen and Culture Commissioner Glenn Micallef condemning the decision, and calls from Ukraine, Italy's Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli, and 22 countries (including Latvia) to exclude Russia. Despite the pressure, Biennale organizers insist they have broken no rules and that the event must remain "a place of dialogue, openness, and artistic freedom." Russia's pavilion, titled "A Tree Rooted in the Sky," will feature over 50 young musicians, poets, and philosophers from Russia and countries including Argentina, Brazil, Mali, and Mexico. The project is curated by Anastasia Karneeva, daughter of a retired general and deputy director at Russia's Rostec defense corporation. The Biennale has already confirmed Russia's inclusion for the first time since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began. I wonder what's your take on this?

@gvbrdghvnian @geogvma Regionally it was more mixed I agree, but percentage wise actually very similar results 55/40% GD/UNM vs 53/38% Tisza/Fidesz. The big difference is voter turnout - 60% in Georgia vs 78% Hungary

@gvbrdghvnian @geogvma And props to him for that, though I think its quite a similar situation, where if the 2012 elections wouldn’t have been such a landslide, Misha would have clung on to power. Something Bidzina seems to have studied and understood quite well

For years 🇪🇺 officials have ”blamed” lack of progress on various files related to 🇺🇦 but also tougher measures on 🇷🇺 (and others) on the 🇭🇺 veto . Soon it will be time to test that and see if others were hiding behind Budapest

The defeat of Viktor Orbán would also serve as proof that people can overcome the Kremlin's deeply entrenched "War vs Peace" propaganda - one that portrays pro-Russian leaders as the only guarantors of peace or invents imaginary enemies supposedly threatening the country or its national values, with those same leaders cast as the sole protectors. After Viktor Orbán's defeat, the Kremlin would have to work hard to come up with a new narrative.

@Mikiashvili_M Don’t know about Armenia, but in Georgia the incumbent was unelectable already in 2007 if you paid attention. That no ‘normal’ opposition existed was very much a product of the politics from this time. A legacy that haunts and hurts us even today.

In a way, Armenia’s political situation reminds me of Georgia 2010: the incumbent is still very much electable, but the demand for a “normal opposition” is high; meanwhile, all opposition is odious and un-electable. This is where Russia’s man Ivanishvili jumped in. I see that Pashinyan has learned Georgia lessons and I understand that Russia is not the same now either, but let’s not underestimate what they could orchestrate (or undermine) for the following election cycle, after June 2026.
