'The reason that Gatsby (the novel, if not the character) still has plenty to say to us is that it captures the precise moment that modern America came into recognizable shape. It is about the move from countryside to metropolis, from unum to pluribus, from hierarchy to heterarchy in all aspects of cultural and economic life. It captures a world in which nothing is fixed in terms of status, fortune, and self-fashioning—and it narrates the anxieties caused by such freedom.' reason.com/2013/05/02/the…

@Peter_A_Kat @AvidCommentator I’m negotiating my mum transition to aged care Pete and I worry with lack of staff resourcing what would happen with a complete feeeze. We don’t want to be like Japan

@AvidCommentator Of course we could also weight trade skills higher than dog walking and yoga teaching when selecting migrants. Our current trades workforce has little excess capacity to build those extra houses.

The Coalition has plans to limit net overseas migration to 170k per year. With a housing deficit of over 300k homes by the next election, this would basically result in small growth in the housing deficit based on KPMG's numbers. No real net progress.

A bombshell document reveals the Coalition’s secret plan to slash immigration and shut out entire regions for up to three years. > bit.ly/4bXfmkA

Don’t let the Left rewrite history. 50 years ago today the worst government in Australian history was dismissed. A few weeks later the Australian people spoke, roundly rejecting Whitlam & Labor. The Whitlam era wasn’t Camelot. It was horrible time for millions of Australians.

I don't think the Zohran stans realize just how fucked this city will be when all the high-earners migrate out to Jersey and Connecticut. You cannot act so entitled to other people's earnings and expect them to not put up a fight.

I half agree with you on this. Developing out is better than developing up, though that will require cutting some red and green tape. To paraphrase Dr Strangelove, we should "learn to stop worrying and embrace suburban sprawl"... by making it much easier for new Greenfield developments on the edge of cities/towns. That would improve housing affordability, albeit further away from capital city centres. At the same time, local communities should be able to come together to form something like a "neighbourhood body corporate" that can set local rules about allowable development & shared spaces. Some places may decide to allow apartment developments, but many others will prefer to preserve their suburban or semi-rural lifestyle. Some of those preserved suburbs will end up with very high house prices, which isn't great for new buyers in those suburbs, but to some degree that is a reward for the people who built a desirable lifestyle in their neighbourhood. Having said that, my preference would be for homeowners to be able to more easily build granny-flats and dual living opportunities, which is one way to encourage multi-generational living and allowing the next generation to stay close to their community. I wouldn't force this approach on any neighbourhood, but I'd prefer to move into a neighbourhood that took this approach.

I sympathise with the younger generation and housing affordability, but I’m against the “cut red and green tape” approach. It will simply be a licence to destroy good suburbs with scores of apartment blocks. Open up more land, don’t ruin existing neighbourhoods. Moss Vale, NSW 👇

The United States is no longer a reliable trade partner for Australia. Today I asked the Victorian Government to activate their global trade office networks to urgently find alternative markets for agricultural products to save Aussie farmers and processors from disaster.

We are living in an age of unprecedented material wealth and personal freedom, yet all we do is complain and try to restrict our own and other people's choices. Here's how to get past what I call 'The Agony of Abundance.' My short talk from @poptech 2024.

Some clips from our forum on the libertarian vote in 2024. 🧵 First, @ComicDaveSmith explaining his reluctant likely vote for Trump. In short: J6 was overblown, Trump at least made a pitch to libertarians, Harris is an empty suit embracing neocons.

I have no doubt that had @billshortenmp won the 2019 election Australian would have been better off on so many fronts - housing, climate, equity. He persisted and is a major contributor in the @AlboMP government. Thanks Bill and all the best.

@johnhumphreys99 That would be ideal as it lowers overall tax receipts and rebalances vertical equalisation but requires fortitude on cutting federal spending

The federal budget continues the seemingly unstoppable rise in real tax/person in Australia. The stage3 cuts are a welcome relief (the dip near the end), but they are soon undone by continuing bracket creep. Australia needs another round of income tax cuts ASAP.

I am thrilled and honoured to return to Stake F1 Team KICK Sauber in 2025 and to represent the global German car manufacturer and technology pioneer AUDI on its way into Formula 1 in the future. It‘s a big project with high ambitions and a huge challenge, a challenge that I am very much looking forward to. The conversations with Andreas Seidl and Oliver Hoffmann were very trustful, characterised by a lot of appreciation and mutual understanding regarding the common goals. At the same time I would like to express a special thank you to the entire Haas F1 Team, especially Gene and Guenther, for placing their trust in me 1,5 years ago and making a comeback in F1 possible. I will do everything I can in the remaining 19 races to be as successful as possible.
