An Open Letter to the “Karen Read Is Guilty” Crowd I have one very simple question for those of you who genuinely believe that Karen Read hit Officer John O’Keefe with her vehicle and left him to die in the cold: Why aren’t you furious with the Massachusetts State Police? If you truly believe she is guilty, then wouldn’t you also believe that law enforcement had a duty to conduct a competent, thorough, and unbiased investigation to ensure justice for John and accountability for the person responsible? Instead, we saw an investigation riddled with mistakes, conflicts, questionable decisions, missing opportunities, and conduct that has caused countless people to lose faith in the entire process. How can anyone who believes Karen is guilty not be outraged that the investigation was handled in a way that created so much doubt and controversy? If your position is that she committed this crime, then the people tasked with investigating it failed both John and the pursuit of justice by conducting an investigation that left so many unanswered questions. Justice should never depend on whether you like the defendant. It should depend on a process we can trust. So I’ll ask again: If you truly believe Karen Read killed John O’Keefe, why aren’t you angry at the Massachusetts State Police for completely botching the investigation? Please be advised that I’m aware that I am fat and ugly and all of the above, insults will not be accepted as a formal answer. I’ll wait. Thanks.
