Teaches politics at Manoa (Hawaii); asli secularist, unrepentant Nehruvian, cricket tragic, good whisky + great music = bliss.

@sbmitche Never mind. I see from your CV that you have assessed a total of 58 candidates.

@sbmitche What is the total number of people you have evaluated? How many were going up for tenure and how many were up for full? Might be useful to know.

I keep data on Google Scholar citation counts at the time I evaluate folks for tenure/promotion letters. The average number of cites among those going up for tenure that I have reviewed is 191, while the average number of cites for those being promoted to full is 1848.

From the Futile-Gestures Dept. comes a serious announcement: since it appears that Musk actually now owns this space, I am quitting Twitter. In the off-chance that any of the motley crew that "follows" me would like to remain in touch, my email is krishna@hawaii.edu Adios amigos.

@avikpram @HitchhikerQ Close. You got 2 out of 3. Robi Thakur, Bose, and Manik-da were 1-2-3. It was back in the late 1980s, so today Ganguly may well figure in the top 3.

Schadenfreude: watching the Ambani-owned Mumbai Indians lose match after match after match and being grateful that money can't always buy success. (I know the teams they are losing to are every bit as problematic - but hey, I take what I get these days).

@NairYasmin Blessed are those who get to see the Sopranos for the first time. Though watching it for the 2nd or 4th or nth time ain't bad either.

Great morning so far. Me: *Tumbles into a child and then steps on their foot* Me: “Oh my god is your son ok? I am so sorry.” Man: “My daughter is fine.”

@PoMoGandhi As we appreciate the courage of Brinda Karat, let us also remember this: had she been a Muslim or a Dalit woman, she would not have been able to halt the demolition. Chances are quite high that she might have been violently dealt with and certainly imprisoned. That is who we are.

@raagwasgood Thanks Anurag. I had emailed him at that address and did not receive a reply, was wondering if it was still active/current.

@sidvee Some bizarre captaincy by Rohit. I would have either not used Unadkat at all in the final two overs, or at worst have him bowl the 19th and keep the final one for Bumrah.

@BajpaiKanti Evidently our comparative advantage lies in something called "jugaad" which (as a good southie) I cannot quite define. It comes in handy when you want to run a lassi shop on a street corner but don't want to pay the electricity board. Unf its not very good for the bigger stuff.

Is anyone in India paying serious attention to what China has done? India is neither the US free market innovator nor the Chinese state-led innovator. What is the Indian model...or just a muddle?
Matt Sheehan@mattsheehan88

How did China go from a technological backwater to an innovation powerhouse in just 20 years? It's a big question with big implications for 🇨🇳, 🇺🇸, and 🌍. I take a crack at answering it in my new piece for @ForeignAffairs. 🧵 1/x foreignaffairs.com/articles/china…

@jaigalagali @ShashiTharoor Of course, I remember Jai! Its great to see your 'project' has grown so well over the yrs. I watched the Chepauk test against Pak that India won, thanks to Sunny and Kapil. It was also Sandeep Patil's test debut - another great talent that did not quite live up to its promise!
