@SarahOpenSciEd @OpenSciEd session Great ideas for how to not let “grading get in the way of learning”. But support documenting our journey of sense making & finding ways to grade. Focus on notebooks, discussion & small writing assignments. Hearing from three different teachers.

What and how we grade cannot get in the way of the sense making and the learning community in which S ideas are valued. @SarahOpenSciEd #NSTA22

While I can't have favorites, I love the way that Unit 6.6 gets at cells by thinking about how we heal and how we grow! I think that this unit would have been the biggest value-add when compared to how I used to teach these concepts. #NGSSchat openscied.org/instructional-…

Okay folks, our last question for tonight. This has been a blast! Q7: What is your favorite phenomenon or activity from the OpenSciEd Middle School units and why? #NGSSchat #MyOpenSciEdStory Not everyone will have an answer, which is totally ok!

A6: I LOVE seeing teachers from all over the WORLD collaborating and sharing resources and guidance in our Facebook Groups. They are so innovative and generous in how they share their expertise and ideas #NGSSchat openscied.org/facebook-group…

Q6: Our materials are #OER which means that people are free to share and adapt the materials for any purpose. - How have you benefited from the ability to freely share adaptations of resources? - Where do you go to find new ideas and share your innovations? #NGSSchat #GoOpen

@Pearwilliambaur Me too William! I thought that Biology was only about memorizing vocabulary. It was so far away from the actual living world to me.

@MarkNechanicky Love this description Mark "messy, revisable, needs to communicate and test out". Sounds exactly like how I as an adult still go about making sense of things. #NGSSchat

A2 A big shift for me is sci models. Not to teach them as background knowledge but to teach them as a practice. Something Ss connect to phenomena in a messy, revisable, need to communicate and test out task. Models are always approximations anyways, let's tell Ss that. #ngsschat

@DrDSteele_PhD Curious @DrDSteele_PhD what you found when you did this deep dive. Were there particular SEPs/CCCs that were already strong and ones where there were big gaps? Love that this was your approach - super smart. #NGSSchat

@sbottasullivan I love this recipe that you have here! They are all important aspects of it and no one item would be impactful alone.

A2 Our classrooms are changing bc of: 💙Access to HQ units 🧡 PD time to learn from the units & instructional shifts 💚 Examples of student work, videos of classrooms 💙 Support from admin (time, room for trying out, purchasing of materials.) #NGSSChat

For many this vision is very different from what they experienced, so... Q2: What has been the most helpful in wrapping your brain around what it takes to create classrooms where students are making sense of phenomena using the 3 dimensions of the Framework? #NGSSchat

If you’re not familiar with @OpenSciEd, we tweeted an introduction summary earlier today using #NGSSchat. Our chat today will be focused on what we have learned as a community as we have transitioned to teaching & learning with Framework-based standards like the #NGSS. (1/2)

I'm helping out with this #modphys workshop for Alabama for the next 10 days and my immediate thought is that I'm envious of how other states (that aren't California) have organized science professional development and resources. #iteachphysics

@sbottasullivan @OpenSciEd Are the HS teachers in the area considering using the HS unit? If so, might be a good reason to stay MS.
