@JakeAnbinder Society needs to recognize the genuine skill of creating "new ideas."
Education is exposure to existing data and teaching analysis, in order to ideally create new meaningful data down the line.
Currently AI is unable to create new ideas, only remixing existing data.

I don't really understand how you can mock Harvard for giving ChatGPT a 3.34 GPA while also mocking Harvard for having an average GPA of 3.8. What that shows is ChatGPT is a significantly subpar student!

@giansegato Skilled writing is going to be more important than ever once people realize that AI doesn't write, it's just remixing old datasets, and not doing it particularly well.

Talked with a startup founder whose startup got acquired (to be announced in public soon). This person first got an inbound from the founder of the company who ended up buying them, thanks to an essay they published, online, about the software industry. Writing can open doors!

@mcnees I caught Google A/B testing on me with their search results: searched for a science topic, was surprised to get scholarly research results instead of SEO nonsense from cosmetic surgeon blogs.
G might be losing users & valuable search terms due to overly ad-driven search results.

That would suggest (to me, a non-expert) that it isn’t based on what it knows about me. Both searches are from a regular window. Still, I’d expect a lot less variation in when it serves untested research and when it serves the consensus answer here.

Let me explain one reason why this is a potentially serious problem.
First, you should know that when I search google from an incognito window it gives me the right answer: just shy of 14 billion years, the current scientific consensus among cosmologists and astronomers.

@ZenOfDesign I suspect that "being funny" requires adversity. People can't learn to be intrinsically funny because it's a result of surviving ridiculous bullshit with your sanity only mostly intact.
For example, being quippy is a way to comment on stupid directives without facing punishment.

@Sarah_Swanson Yeah. AI is at this point pretty terrible at comedy because (a) comedy usually requires novelty, you can only repeat catch phrases for so long and (b) comedy requires some awareness of where 'the line' is. I've tried, and all chat-GPT jokes are safer and lamer than dad jokes.

My best friend's dad was a professor of Africana history at our hometown university, and I attended his classes on critical race theory and racism as a guest when I was still in high school. Got lots of weird looks, took lots of notes, was happy to be there. Thanks Dr. George.

That picture with all the white folks at a dinner or whatever seems nice, and the comments are funny about not noticing when there's only white people around. I can tell you though most(American) white folks notice immediately when they are the only white person at a party.
