The thing people forget about Lincoln is that he was no Yankee. Born in the South - Kentucky - grew up in the (at the time) near identical Southern Indiana culture, moved to Illinois as an adult. The past is much more complicated than the simplified version most believe today.

What people forgot about the Civil War is that there were three distinct power centers: the Yankee Northeast, the Midwest & the South. All three were roughly equal in power, and it was two on one. Most of the American-born Union troops were Midwesterners,

Whenever you see someone gloat about "Union superiority" or mock the Confederacy for losing and only existing for four years, remember this. The Confederacy, a fledgling agricultural country, with only a fraction of the population, training, equipment, organization, medical supplies, and manufacturing capabilities of their adversary, managed to fight and damn near almost win a conventional war against the federal government. Confederate victories were so decisive that they continue to inspire generations to this day. There's a reason that Generals Robert E Lee and Stonewall Jackson are revered for their battlefield prowess and gentlemanly character. Remember who you are southerner, and don't let mockery break your resolve. Mockery of the Confederacy simply reveals that whomever you're discoursing with has no idea what they're talking about. You descend from the Founding Fathers. You descend from heroes.

Maybe because capitalism is why we enjoy our high standard of living. Socialism where tried has failed. No one is saying capitalism shouldn't have rules and it does like minimum wage as well as social safety net. But putting guardrails much different than scrapping it.

Yesterday, the Brandt proposal to buy a portion of the REAL District passed executive committee and will head for a final vote next week.
Councillor Shannon Zachidniak (with the support of David Froh, Victoria Flores, and Shobna Radons) unsuccessfully attempted to delay the vote and make administration go back to get a 3rd party assessment completed for a second time. The outgoing CFO told Zachidniak this would likely take up to another half a year to redo and yield the same conclusions about the properties’ deteriorated condition and value.
Meanwhile, the CEO of Brandt Industries, Shaun Semple, told council he wishes to get started immediately so the facilities can be ready to showcase for the 2027 Grey Cup. Semple told council the total investment into the campus in Zachidniak’s ward would exceed $113M, and likely double in the future. Zachidniak, Flores, Froh, and Radons voted against it citing concerns about insufficient time and public consultation.

Everyone always shows the dilapidated midwestern/eastern gutted towns but never show the Upper Midwest Germanic rural order. It's quite a stark difference once you see the Appalachia's. Fresh gravel every year. ORDERLY. Everything under cover.
