It was the most wonderful exchange of ideas on environmental issues at Rautala village in Sana Hinsar Gram Panchayat of Angul district. The women of the village have pledged to keep their village clean & plastic free. They meet every Sunday for their clean green mission. It was a delightful interaction with students & faculty of the B M High School Jarada, Angul district. The students were quite aware about the dangers of plastic pollution. The high school has been keeping its premises plastic free for a long time. They had designed and were using a bin made out of plastic bricks at the school premises. The Principal & faculty members were keen on ensuring the students were aware of environmental issues & it showed in the attitude of the students. The Angul Forest Division celebrated “World Environment Day 2025” on 5th June at the Conference Hall, Circuit House, Angul, with the theme “Plastic-Free Environment.” The event aimed to raise awareness about the adverse effects of plastic pollution and promote sustainable, eco-friendly living. Sri Siddharth Kumar Pradhan was conferred with the prestigious “Prakruti Bandhu Award” by the RCCF Angul, the Collector & District Magistrate of Angul District, and the DFO, Angul, in recognition of his remarkable contributions to environmental conservation. A passionate nature lover, he is actively working towards making Angul plastic-free. Recently, he led an inspiring initiative at Jarada High School, where he, along with school children, created a dustbin using plastic bottles and pouches. He also educated the students on how to repurpose plastic waste into useful items for everyday life. Sri Pradhan and his team are deeply committed to creating a cleaner, greener, and plastic-free Angul. The palms were planted in September 2020, and the first year was uncertain—we weren’t sure if they would survive. But now, it’s incredible to see over 500 palm trees thriving, all grown from seeds. Though only five years have passed, the results are promising. "One Million Mangroves by 2030" Initiative Launches at Devi River Mouth to Protect Odisha's Coast.🌊 The Odisha Paryavaran Sanrakshan Abhiyan Trust ( @OdishaSeaTurtle), in partnership with Sabuja Sakha Astaranga, Odia Daily @DharitriLive1 , and @OrissaPOSTLive, has launched a ambitious mission to plant one million mangroves by 2030. This critical initiative was inaugurated at the ecologically sensitive Devi River Mouth, an area still recovering from the devastating 1999 Super Cyclone. The launch ceremony witnessed the presence of esteemed guests including Smt. @AdyashaSatpath3 , CEO of The Dharitri Odia Daily & The OrissaPOST, and Shri @SatpathyLive , Editor-in-Chief. They were joined by local leaders such as Sarpanch Shri Ramachandra Kandi, Astaranga Gram Panchayat, along with renowned conservationists Bichi Bhai (recipient of Biju Patnaik Wildlife Award) and Charu Maa (Indian Biodiversity Award winner). The event saw active participation from over 70 PRI members, fishermen community representatives, youth leaders, and local residents. This ambitious program addresses the alarming global loss of 20% of mangrove cover since 1980, while specifically working to restore Odisha's natural coastal defenses. Mangroves serve as vital barriers against storms, prevent soil erosion, support marine biodiversity, and sequester four times more carbon than tropical forests. The initiative builds upon OPSA Trust's 14 years of grassroots experience in coastal conservation, which includes successfully planting mangroves at Devi River Mouth and mobilizing community efforts to plant 1,20,000 mangroves across Balasore, Erasama (Jagatsinghpur), and Bahuda River Mouth areas. The #MillionMangroves initiative uniquely combines traditional ecological knowledge with scientific approaches to create sustainable solutions. It focuses not just on plantation but also creating livelihood opportunities for Marginilized fishermen communities, transforming former mangrove-cutters into conservation champions. The program aims to protect vulnerable coastal populations from climate impacts while reviving critical wetland ecosystems.
